My 04 Liberty has the 5 speed manual ******. I notice a lot
(at least to me) of rear end back lash between 1st and 2nd
gear.

I thought at first my emg brake might be sticking and that
was causing the problem. I might also add that the 04 has
four wheel disc brakes. I took the Jeep to a brake dealer
(not Dodge dealership) and had the rear brakes checked.
I was called later and was told the rear rotors needed
replaced. They could not be turned (47k on the clock).
They also said they backed the emg brake off a bit.

The first time I used the emg brake (for parking) I noticed
is felt like it self adjusted back to where they were in the
first place. Now I hear more back lash between 1st and 2nd
gear again.

I was told the back lash is *normal*. I didn't think you
should be able to hear it in the cab plus feel somewhat
of a slow down between 1st and 2nd gear... I've had
other manuals and never heard or felt this much back
lash.

Anyone else have this problem with four wheel disk brakes
and manual trannys?

Thanks for reading........ Bill in NW Ohio

Back lash it kind of an incorrect term for what you are experiencing. It sound like drag, but if only when you shift from 1st to 2nd? Then it can't be all that serious mechanically. If it does not happen from other gear to gear shifts, then it should not be a huge problem at all.

However; If you have BAS (Braking Assist System), you may want to see if the BAS is applying the brakes for some reason. BAS will apply brakes when it thinks the wheels lose grip on the road, for any reason. This can be from hard acceleration, or due to a too steep a turn, it applies the brakes. In order for it to work when making a bend too fast, the system depends on a clock spring angle sensor. If it is detecting a dangerous turn situation, it will apply the brakes to the tires it thinks will correct the turn. If the wheel sensors think the tires lost grip, it applies brakes. If you shift, and say it throws the vehicle forward, lurching forward, when depressing the clutch, it may be detecting that, and applying the brakes.

I am just going over anything else that can cause your condition. Since you do not have an automatic, there is no 1st to 2nd bind up problem, so you can count the transmission out.

^^^yeah, my 05 doesn't have any of that stuff......I got anti-lock brakes which was optional in 05 but included on the Limited I got. But all that other stuff I don't have.:D

Part of the federally mandated stuff on 06+ I think. Perhaps it is acting up.

It was an option in 05 as I was trying to say.

I bought mine off the dealer's lot in 05 and all the limiteds' they ordered from the factory at that time were ordered with the ABS. So all of them had it only because the dealer ordered them that way from the factory......but it was still an option in 05. Got it??? Didn't mean to be confusing.
