Getting ready to do the PS pump on the KJ and would like some input on the high pressure line. Last November, I replaced the rack and the HP line (with an edelmann one, looked identical to the factory one). Ever since then, it whined a bit more than it had been (has been whiny for a few years). Could the aftermarket line be causing that? A new Mopar line is $120, while I don't want to spend that if I don't have to, but I will if I need to. Any ideas?

Thanks!

If there is any pulsing feel in the steering, there might be air in the lines

I'm hoping to learn from this too. When I bought the 05 last December there was clearly a catastrophic PS hose failure. Aftermarket HP line and original pump. It whines a bit more than I like. Wonder if line or pump too.

I wouldn't follow my own lead:happy175:

No pulsing at all...the level in the reservoir has been stable for the past year.

I'm leaning towards the pump doesn't like the new line and the new rack. Plus a couple years ago I might have run it almost dry and in the last round of repairs, started it before bleeding it. :blah:

I would assume that the line is fine and it's just the pump. I can't see how the line would cause an issue with the system unless it was leaking, to which you say the level has been good. Or if the steel section is kinked causing a restriction.

Personally, I'd just replace the pump and reuse your existing line as long as there are no leaks or kinks.

Yeah, the line looked identical to one I took out and fit the same way. Thanks!

A PS whine is either air in the system or a worn pump.

Just because you don't have a visual leak or a actual leak in the PS system does not mean air can not enter and cause a noise. The return line is always over looked and can get microscopic holes that will not leak fluid but allow air into the system since the return side can be under a slight vacuum.

And just to let you know that from 20+ years experiance once a pump starts making noise it will always make noise.

Is the return line the one with the cooler I assume? So maybe I should pick one of those up. I'll check for bubbles in the reservoir with it running. Is an aftermarket return line ok or it a Mopar only deal?

Edit: Just checked Rock auto and it looks like I can either get the entire cooler line for $275 with a new cooler or replace either of the lines coming off the cooler (gear to cooler or reservoir to cooler) with a cut to length type kit. Any advise on what to do?

Cooler seems fine to me. Not leaking and the fins are in good shape.

Looks like the cut to length kits use the spring hose clamps (like the OE radiator hose ones), is that good? I haven't looked at what the factory used, but I assume it's not under a lot of pressure.

When i did mine I got a mopar pump with dorman return and pressure line. Haven’t had any problems since and no more noise. For the return line I just bought the whole assembly with the cooler.

That's good to hear about the Dorman setup, I'm leaning towards that way. Any leaks?

Has anyone used the line replace kits that keep the existing cooler?

I'd just go to the local auto parts store and get a couple of feet of 3/8"/10mm trans cooler line.

The factory crimps those lines on but the OE style spring clamps work very well also on the return side.If you use the worm screw type hose clamps make sure you use 2 clamps per connection as they like to loosen after time.

I kept my OE cooler and made my own lines but then again the OE lines had to go for my SFA setup with a old style gear box.

I replaced my HP line due to seepage ... used a Mopar part from Rockauto. No issues afterwards, but I was sure to change the fluid & bleed the air per the service manual.

AFter a little over a year now the dorman lines don’t show any signs of leaking. And for me after replacing the lines and pump the noise went away completely. I don’t see a problem doing it either way I just didn’t want to fight with it and thought it wails be easier to just replace the whole thing.
