Problem with AC????

Turned the AC on about 2 weeks ago was fine then after awhile sounds like the ac compressor pulley is making noise? Turned the ac off and it was still making noise. Went out the next day and started the Jeep all was fine? Turned AC on yesterday and right away started making the noise again? Turned AC off and its still making the noise. Started it this morning was still making noise, just started it before and it seems to be getting quieter . Anyone have any similar problem? It is a 2002 Jeep Liberty with about 76,000 miles on it. Any ideas, or help would be GREATLY Appreciated

AC clutch is dead.
Sadly, cheaper to replace entire compressor with a remanned unit than it is to replace the clutch.

Ok.. The 1st option, normally it is suppesed to use only clean air, and come out stronger.
The 2nd option uses a combo of clean and outside air and doesn't come as strong as 1st.

In my kj, the 2nd option comes out stronger than the 1st.
When i use the 1st option, I hear a rumblung noise by the glove box, and the air comes out weaker.

Tha AC works fine anyway, is as cold as it could be.

What could be the problem.
Any suggestions?

What about the diverter in the heater/ac box? The rumbling noise could be a deffective vacuum pot or a stuck door. The OP says that on the outside air selection the ac blows well. On the recirc selection it just plain blows.

Wondering what is actually wrong now? We spent some time on it yesterday had it running with fan on position 1 and AC on recirculate and the clutch is engaging and disengaging like it should, only thing is when it disengages sounds like the pulley is making noise almost like a bearing noise??? This same noise stays there even when you turn the AC completely off, although sometimes not as loud. AC is blowing COLD air. Could this possibly be a bearing in the pulley going bad, looks like you can''t just buy the pulley for it? Really don't have the 500-900 to fork out right now to have someone else fix it, we pretty much do all our own work on the jeeps. We really have no issue with the AC not blowing cold air if it wasn't for the noise we wouldn't even think there was a problem with it?

Anyone else have any kind of noise from the compressor or pulley area ?

OK, from what you originally said, it sounded like it was coming from inside the dash, not the engine bay.

ThunderbirdJunkie will say your AC clutch is probably toast.

I can see rust dust around the pulley on mine and suspect it might go soon too, although it's quiet and seems to work fine.
I know a few guys had that same problem and had to replace the whole whole thing or bypass the pulley with a shorter belt

Yanked the pulley, running an 82.5" belt ITBJRC.
Clutch died last September when it was starting to get cool. Starting to get warm, so ThunderbirdJunkie is going to have to fix this stupid thing to make the old lady happy.
A remanned compressor is cheaper than an OEM clutch btw.

well we took the serpentine belt off to see if maybe it was the tensioner pulley well that turns nice and easy no problem but the AC compressor pulley spins but is rough and not as freely and making the noise it does when running with ac off or on so going to get a puller to pull it of and go from there.

Not that you are,I bypassed the compressor,used a 827K6 belt to achieve that,just saying. Oh,that is a Autozone #

Can also use ebay to find used and new ac compressors...anywhre from $130 up to over $300 are main reason with going with the AC compressor clutch kit was it was affordable and while we still think we just need the pulley bearing, we thought while we have it apart might as well do it all.... Plus we didnt want to go get the ac discharged because its not just the compressor you have to replace, also the accumulator, orfice tube, O rings... here is a link for the whole thing

1st don't buy anything from ebay,no warranty and crap parts anyways.

2nd if you have never done a A/C clutch before your going to have fun,be prepared to rip it apart a few times to get the air gap right.There are tool kits to help make it easier(a must in some cases) but those kits run well over $400 alone.

You do see the amount of special tools required right? Setting the air gap and checking it is just a small part(but very important).
