Sorry to hear about you KJ!
But it looks pretty far from being totalled, I would say around $1700-2k.

Blake, I am so sorry to see that. I know how well you took care of that little jeep and it makes me so sad. The door is easy, they will probably just replace it, but the inside/fender area could probably be popped back out if there is a way to get inside from underneath somehow. I really doubt they would total it.

How the hell do those a-holes get to drive around without insurance? How is that even possible? Do they just cancel their insurance and go running red like like idiots..

I am glad you didn't mention to that cop that you were in a hurry to get to class...

The damage on my Jeep would need to exceed 7.5k to be considered totaled. I can guarantee thats not over 5k worth of damage.

Anyway, thanks for all the kind comments guys.

And yes hyedipin, they have insurance then cancel it. He had proof of insurance but it was expired. My brother was rear ended in his jeep around a year ago in the same town and they didnt have insurance either. Not sure why they are allowed to get by with it. If I was injured and really wanted to I could sue and take everything the guy remotely has. If he doesnt have anything I could probably sue his family and take everything they have too. Not really something I would do though.

I'm with you. The guy probably doesn't have anything you could sue for anyways. The only person to get anything would be the lawyers....you would end up with aggravation. It would be nice to at least get back your deductible. It's frustrating....here in CT, insurance is mandatory yet only about 70% of drivers have it. About 20% of my premium is to pay for "uninsured motorist" coverage (medical only).

Sorry to rant...I am glad that at least you weren't hurt!

The insurance company will take into consideration the wholesale value of the car, then if the repair is more than a certain percentage of that wholesale value, then they total it. So a 2004 KJ with $3000 worth of damage could be getting close to being totaled.
They use blue book, not whole sale and it's usually between 70%-75% of vehicle blue book value before it's totaled.

Looking at that damage I'm saying about $1800-$2000 max for the damage, not to bad at all.Shouldn't even have to add a damage disclosure to the title.

X2...

Thats what State Farm told me after the Deer Incident... They said in the old days it used to be more like 50% but with the cost of a new vehicle now days and the ability to rebuild stuff its more like 75%.

I'm thinking more like $3k minimum but like i said that depends on being able to re-use everything from the door and if they decide to repaint the whole side to get the color matching right or if they just paint the replacement door, etc.. Lots of factors there.

when you take it to the shop, ask them to come to you with the estimate first, then ask them to add a bit more so you can get extra stuff done to it and you'll give them the work :)

My buddy's truck got clipped on the beach because someone left their truck in drive and got out...it only damaged the wheel well on the left QP side (nissan titan)...he talked to the mechanic and had him boost the quote, replacing the left QP, right QP, bumper, and tailgate, just so all the paint would match and all the lines would be perfect. lol.

Can't speak for Blake, but ThunderbirdJunkie has been torched and/or hammered on numerous occasions.

Shit hurts.

The insurance companies that I had to work with, thankfully not many, used wholesale value. It probably varies from company to company, but 70%-75% of blue book will put you right about at wholesale value anyway.

But I agree, this damage won't total it.

Everyone I worked with at the bodyshop went off blue book, whole sale can be as little as 10% of blue book depending on the demand for that vehicle.

Just went and got an estimate. Trying to find the nicest place I can, this place I went to is known for working on Mercedes and Porches so I went there. Place was pretty sweet, they had a garage just for estimates, pulled up and the door opened up. The estimate is very universal though. Like it has the labor time to replace a heated mirror and the 'liberty' badge on the front door, were working with the back door here. It says it has a 5 speed ****** too. Anyway, it says right at $3k total. I mentioned that I thought he didnt hit the rear tire but if they could to check the alignment, so that includes that. Thinking of taking it to a Jeep dealership here in town that weve bought a couple of jeeps from to see what they think. I tend to think that dealerships are all about getting it done quick so idk if Ill have it fixed there. But then again they fix jeeps all the time so theyve been there and done that.

The nice thing about having a Jeep dealership do it though is they will have the OEM parts or order them in rather than using aftermarket stuff. I had my bodyshop order all the parts from the largest Chrysler/Jeep dealer here in MN. Mills Auto Group has numerous dealers and a large parts department, even a delivery truck that you see going around all the time.

I'd rather have a dealer do it. That's what they do, fix Jeeps.

I've found out that dealership body shops have MUCH better customer service and quality and stand behind their work with no BS.

I know from experience. I will always visit a dealer shop... for body repairs. Mechanical and electrical repairs? Meh... only for warranty.

Hmm... Not to be cheap but i would go with the dealership since they are specifying an OEM door.

But also compare the painting, the bodyshop and dealership might have different ideas there. Some will paint just the replaced parts and try to blend, others will paint the entire side or at least one panel ahead of and behind the replaced panel. So there could be some price difference there if the dealership is just quoting on painting the door and rocker/doorjamb area after repair.

Sounds like a good price though either way. Are you chomping at the bit to get the repair done yet? I would be... lol

If it were summer I'd want it done right now since I keep my Jeep spotless in the summer. Since its winter I dont care as much which is good I guess. Whenever the insurance gets around to fixing it Ill be happy. Yeah, I talked to the dealership and they did say they would blend into the front door and the rear quarter panel. They said I would not be able to tell anything was painted and that they stand behind it for the life of the Jeep.. So idk..

Im going to try and keep that door though! I wanna hang it on my garage wall whenever I get around to building a house. :)
