The old cv oil can get black and gooey/runny. Or maybe someone soaked the front joint down with oil. Put a drain pan below it then, to catch what's coming out.

Could be the cv joints were making noise, and someone soaked it with oil in the hopes of having a cheap very temporary fix.

yes was thinking that,Transfer case end boot is split and noisy,maybe the diff end one if shot as well? (as looks like its been soaked in oil)

Possible, but that side hardly fails. I'd bet someone already took out the driveshaft and put it back in to sell, but soaked it with oil to reinstall easier.

You'll find your balls will function much better and quieter once they have a constant supply of lube! (naughty)
