Newbie Question

I just recently bought my Jeep Liberty, first jeep I've ever owned. My goal is to drive the pan american highway sometime within the next year. My question is what ad-ons, mods would you suggest I do to my jeep before I make the trip?

Jeep Specs:
2004 Jeep Liberty Sport 2wd, 146,000
all stock (it didn't even come with fog lights)

Where do you start?
Better tires/ suspension/making sure all fluids have been changed and ready / tow points/ skids/tow straps/ the list is long for a trip of over 29,000 miles with many of those almost impassible at times
How long ( months/years) did you set aside for making this trip ?
Sleeping arrangements/cooking/carrying food.......
