I was checking my PCV valve today and noticed leaks in a couple spots. Also a mystery core zap strapped into place. Can anyone provide some insight? 2002 Jeep Liberty Limited 3.7L

Leaks are tough to tell. Could be coolant or oil. Doesn't look all that fresh. Cord might be for a block heater. Check you build sheet.

Looks like the "valve" cover gasket is definitely leaking. That's drip in the exhaust and smell pretty bad.

Thanks for the information. I also noticed oil in my PCV line. What can cause this?

I've found lots of information on changing the valve cover gasket but not much on the consequences of a leak. What negatives does a leak cause? I don't notice any burning oil smell.

I get some oily residue in my PCV line too but that's sort of what it's supposed to do. It takes the vapors from the crankcase back to the intake. If one of your lines is cracked that could cause the mess you had in your picts. If you have a lot of brown/yellow sludge in your oil fill spout then it can cause blockages that will interfere with the PCV function.

The leaky valve cover will cause odors if bad enough. Of course fire is always a concern. Otherwise it and other leaks may cause oil loss that if undetected by frequent level checks could allow you to run the engine low on oil. This could cause all sorts of bad things to happen.

Remove the hose going into the PCV and clean it or replace it. (should rattle)
Turn counter clockwise to remove it.
They can look a "little" plugged sometimes..

That cord is the block heater, you should tie it up along the L fender side, away from hot zone.
Mine is tied up here, & I used an extension to outside the grille.

Power wash under the hood well, it will be easier to see leaks.
Replace the valve cover gaskets if they are leaking.
I recently power washed,& only covered up the alternator, and that was about it, and let er have it.
Looks ok now..
