First, I know this subject has probably been beat to death. I purchased a 2005 Liberty. Unfortunately it came with just one key. I searched the interweb and read all of the ins and outs of how to program new keys, what is required, can't DIY with only one key, etc, etc. I know that I will have to go to a dealer or locksmith to have this second key done and then I will be able to DIY for a third key etc. I'm a bit frugal, heck I am cheap. I want to do it for as good a price as I can obviously. I have seen plenty of prices for a new key during my searches. It's of course, the integrated key with fob and chip etc. I have seen prices from $16 or so up to $150+. I have not spoken to a dealer yet as I am sure they are pricey. I have spoken to a couple of locksmiths and got quotes from $80 to $95 for programming a key with fob and all if I provide the key from another source and all they do is cut and program it. However, they offer no guarantee it will work unless I specifically bought the key from them. I understand why they would not gaurantee something unless I bought it from them. They each have told me stories of suspect quality keys obtained from cheap sources on the net, not working after beign programmed etc, from China etc. My question is this.. Is this a legitmate concern? Are there issues with these cheap sources or is it basically the locksmiths trying to persuade me into spending more money with them? If there are lesser quality key fobs out there, how can I be sure I don't wind up with one? Is there a known source with good quality keys that I can depend on? I'd hate to pay for the lower qualtiy key then pay someone $80+ to cut and program it and then it not work. I'd be out the price for the key and the cost spent to have them cut and program it and still not have a working second key. If it comes down to just having to swallow it and buy a higher priced key fob from a locksmit or dealer, of course I will do it. But if I can save a buck or more, I'm all for that.

One other question, I have also seen just the blank key with chip-no fob with the electronic door unlock buttons etc. Are those more apt to be of better qualtiy? I could always get one of those and then buy a cheapie fob version and go the DIY route with it being my third key. Then if it doesnt work, I'm only out the cost of the cheapie fob.

Sorry for the long winded question.

Thanks in advance

Pretty long there.

Stop being cheap, get it done right. And no you can not use the non-keyfob/key setup with your '05.To unlock the doors is all that will do but not keep the engione running, different chips/systems between the 2 types of systems.

Okay, so the ultra cheap route of the key only is out. I was quoted by a locksmith for keyfob, cutting and programming $235. Is that unreasonable?

Yes and no.

It's not supposed to be cheap or easy to replace newer keys to make the anti-theft stuff have a better chance of keeping your vehicle from being stolen.

I had a fob programmed and cut for around 200, since i bought used and only had a normal key. The dealership cut one of each by accident, so I got a free one woo!
