I have a 2005 jeep liberty. The handle on the back hatch pulls and releases the glass, but the hatch door will not open. Is there a way to get this off when the latch is broken?

I have taken the inside panels off, etc. and can't find a set of bolts I can unscrew to release the hatch.

I realize once I get the hatch off, i will need to purchase a new door latch, but want to get the hatch off first.

thanks

That happened to me 2 days before I brought her in for oil change/tire rotation so I asked about it. The dealership dudes found that a bolt had dropped out of the release mechanism and was resting in the door, they plucked it out and screwed it back on for no charge and I was on my way. Still not too sure how it came loose. Check that maybe. Good Luck.

Thanks, but the problem is it was making noise so i removed it. then replaced the latch and now it does not work. So I don't think it is the same issue. I am hoping I can figure out how to just take the hatch off.

thanks

Did you find a solution to the problem?

I'm curious because our '06 does the same thing randomly.

Still now answer. I am guessing a cutting torch might be the only way to get the liberty tailgate off.

Anyone have any help? Can I break out one of the tail lights, etc. to get to some bolts?

LATCH - ACCESS PANEL
DESCRIPTION
This panel provides access to the gate latch if gate
power fails. The gate can be unlocked by reaching in
and pushing the lock lever down.
REMOVAL
(1) Using a trim stick C-4755 or equivalent,
remove the access panel.
INSTALLATION
(1) Position and install the access panel

I think if you take that access panel off you can get at the actuator and thus manually open the door. It sounds like it's locked, but it's not unlocking.

I think it is locked, but I have also tried the access panel route and pulled on everything and it still does not want to unlock.
Any other suggestions?

thanks
