Hello everyone,

I am the owner of a 2006 Jeep Liberty (Cherokee here in the EU) 2.8 CRD Limited. Despite being almost 20 years old the car only has 70k km and has been fairly reliable in the 4 years I've had it. Despite this, there is this one issue I've been trying to find a solution to which I'm hoping someone here has already found. There is this howling sound which seems to be coming from the center of the rear wheels. I do not think it is a wheel bearing issue. My best guess is there is something wrong with the axle bearing, but I'm obviously open to ideas. The noise only appears when I'm accelerating slightly and goes away if I push down more with my foot.

Thanks in advance.

Howls around 60mph under acceleration and goes quiet when you take your foot off?
Rear differential needs new bearings.

Start with a diff oil change and inspection, the above is probably correct, but you can't be sure without inspection. I think a u joint could be a poias well.

My rear diff and my nieces rear diff make the same noise. I replaced the bearings and there was no change in the noise. I've heard a couple customer cars with the same diff make that noise. If it doesn't sound similar to a bad wheel bearing and fluid is good, then I would keep running it as is until you notice a change in the noise, such as at a lower speed or gets louder.
