I didn't want to hijack a thread (2.4 burning oil) but here's a question I have...

So the same weight high mileage oils are thicker? I thought they just had additives to condition seals or bearings, etc. Possibly higher detergent too.

some are thicker some aren't. it depends on the maker of the oil. go to bob is the oil guy website and you can learn the multiple viscosities of 5w-30 across the industry! mike

5w-30 is 5w-30 regardless of brand, dino, high mileage,or synthetic. They all must meat the same specs so one is not thicker then the other if labeled the same weight. The high mileage stuff just have some added additives to soften seals is all.

here are virgin oil samples from pennzoil. hm and mobile super 5000, both are 5w-30. as you can see both 5w-30's are not the same weight (noted by cSt Viscosity @ 100'C ). the pennzoil 5w-30 high mileage (as you can see) is almost a 10% thicker 5w-30 oil at 100 degrees c. If you have more interest in this visit the virgin oil sample section at bob is the oil guy! most current market oils have voa there

I use whatever high mileage oil/filter is on "sale" at zatozone, and yes,I do see a difference in consumption between brands and syn/dino. Not much. As for bobtheoilguy, I doubt most of what I see there.

I have 102,000 miles on mine, the last oil change I put in Castrol HM 5w30 since I had over 75K miles. I don't like it, the engine got noiser at an idle so it's coming out. Since I don't have a oil consumption problem I probably don't need it.

I decided that oil labeling/marketing is like pet food - the packaging is for the humans, the pet/car/Jeep doesn't care, it just wants something that works.

155,000 miles and 38 oil changes, using the same Mobile 1, 5W30, never have used any of the high mileage oils they advertise. Last two XJs both had over 250,000 miles and the same oil as the KJ's been using.
Oh and it doesn't use any between changes either.
