i did the trick where i took my heater control unit a part and tapped over the copper leads to allow me to use defrost and floor modes WITHOUT the ac kicking on.

i did this 3 years ago. worked fine until the packing tape i used wore off. so i took it a part again to replace the tape. i did just that and put it all back together.

problem is now, the lights on the complete right hand half of the control unit does not work. the left side half does. from the floor, floor/defrost, defrost side right down the middle is out.

im pretty sure i plugged the connectors back in tight. ill re check tomorrow.

all controls themselves work fine, just half the lights are out. what could cause this?

I never understood this! Whenever you have the floor venting on...even without the little snowflake icon...the AC kicks in? I've never noticed this.

I believe if you do not want the ac compressor to engage, keep it on one of the floor settings. If it involves floor, it won't turn on. Otherwise, yes it will turn on occasionally, especially in defrost. You need to understand that in order to "defrost" (actually de-fog) the windows you need to remove moisture. The AC will remove moisture.

OK. I understood it as the floor vent DID turn the AC compressor on. Oh well. Who knew? Hardly makes a difference to me.

Anyways...back on topic!!

mine is an 06 lib and yes in the floor, floor/defrost, and defrost the ac pump kicks on. as stated in the winter this is very useful to quickly defrost your windows, but it kills your mpgs...or at least it does on my liberty.

i just like to be able to turn the ac off and on as i need it for defrosting. i can actually drive a good ways before having to use the ac pump after i initially get going.

also in the summer i like to have the cooler air blowing on my feet, but i dont need the ac pump on to make this feel good. and or the windshield at night. just feels better and keeps the windows perfectly clear.

so for me, yes, i just want the ability to use the ac pump 10% of the time vs 100% of the time in these modes of fan operation. and with that said, in the summer months, i always pick a day every other week to run the ac the entire drive just to keep the ac oils circulated to avoid drying out the seals.

my 06 turns the compressor on in floor, floor/defrost and defrost. in the other settings its off.

easy answer, yes, i hope so. but how do i change the bulb? guess ill have to tear it open this weekend....

If I understand this correctly, you are saying that you have no illumination on one side of your heater/distribution/fan speed control dials? If this is the case, there are 2 TINY little bulbs in holders in the back of the dash panel behind the control knobs. From memory, there is a screw behind the ash tray and then the panel prises out. As Ryan said, the bulbs are not "Serviceable" as such, as they come in a new holder and turn about 30 degrees and then come out to be replaced with a new bulb in holder. Check it is the bulb by swapping side to side and then replace as necessary. Hope this makes sense if I understand you correctly, if not, disregard everythhing I have said. Cheers, Steve :smokin:
