headlights flash off & on

problems with my 02 liberty
seems I may have an el short some where between switch and headlight
or is there a common fix ?

does not seem to effect tail lights and even sounds perhaps a relay maybe failing

is there a place to start ?

Sometimes when I shut the vehicle off before shutting the headlights off, the headlights will stay on when I try to turn the lights off, I then have to turn the headlights on to shut them off ????

I would definetly look at the relay for sure.

my problem seems to be while driving down the road at night
my head lights flash off and on.

You could exchange the relay with one from another circuit to see if that eleminates the problem. If it is still present try pulling the connectors off the headlights and check the wires going into them - on occassion they will show signs of heat damage. If they do you can either go to the nearest pick-a-part lot and see about nipping some off a KJ there or you can go to your favorite parts store and pick up some replacement connectors (although they probably won't have color-coded wiring).

The lights will stay on for a minute or so unless you remove the key prior to turning them off. They'll turn off by themselves as long as the switch is set to off though. Just wanted to comment on that.

As for the flashing, I would listen to what the other folks are saying, because I don't know =]

Yeah my 07 does the exact same thing. When you flip off the lights too fast sometimes they stay on...idk it like confuses the circuit, which makes no sense. So then i have to go back and turn them back on and back off again. Does anyone know what causes that?

If you're talking about with the ignition off, that is a safety feature... the lights stay on for a few seconds so you can have some light, like maybe going in your house or something.
