Have you Ever left your KJ with Ignition ON?

I stood outside of jeep to turn ignition to On without starting it, to activate wipers, when the darn cell phone rings.. :whip:
Of course I not only forgot I left the keys in it, but it is still in the On Position an hour later, after I dealt with the long distance call. :doh2:
When I return to Jeep this is what I see....

This is when you realize Alzheimer’s disease is a possibility! :icon_lol:
It started fine and all lights went out, but I am wondering can this damage the system/coils? How much power would have drawn in this scenario?

Cell phones are nothing but a tool of Satan. I hope you have learned your lesson. :icon_twisted:

Not in Canada, so can't say that I've ever done a Canucklehead thing like that. :ROFLJest:
Oh, I did lock the keys in my truck only once in my life, but I was 16 at the time. heh heh heh.
Doesn't your door dinger ding when the key is in the ignition?

I don't think any system will be damaged due to this.
However, leaving it on the on position will drain the battery.
I had to learn that the hard way while working on my brakes and stuff.

BTW, you can edit the title by using the advance editing function.

On older cars, the coil would get hot if the key was left on, not sure if it got any hotter than when the engine was running though. I think what was more in jeopardy was the points in the distributor possibly burning, if they were in a "just right" position. Some of you may not even know what points are! ;)

Ya I carry a spare Jeep door key with me now in my wallet, just in case I was to lock em in.:mexsmoke:
I guess the call had me in la la land, but does it ding in the ON/run position with door open?
hmm..Will have to check that out..
It sounds like even though it was left in ON, no damage occurred.
Maybe there is no continuous power to the coil, until you start it?

Oh btw Thanks Brian...I forgot about advanced for title edit...done now.

Had a 69 Cuda with the 340ci beast and dual point ignition. Try setting those points and have them exactly right on. Took a couple of times before I got the hang of it......

TC, I wouldn't worry about hurting anything with the ignition in the "on" position for an hour. And, I know you have a good battery so it should have started right up anyway.

I leave mine like that while I'm cleaning it. I usually have music playing as well. And all those lights are like that as soon as I turn the key. Should be the same as accessory?

Filed plenty on the old Shovelhead, never on any of my cars, always had a new set along in the glove box! :icon_lol: Had extras for the Harley as well but someone always was " borrowing " them when we were out riding.

I do not miss points. Had several cars where I drove around with a can of WD-40 and a screw driver in the glove compartment in case it rained. Although the screw drive could also serve double duty by holding open the carburetor butterflies when it got super cold so I could start the damned thing.

Fuel injection and electronic ignition are the way to go.

I like things that are mechanical, while things like points etc can be a pain at times, still like them.
If you had to keep a can of WD40 along you must of had a cracked cap or something

Lol! I don't miss the points days! My dual-point setup was great when it ran...kinda like my tri-power carburetors when I could get then to stay synchronized... Ahhhh...the good old days.
