I don't know if this subject has been covered. I have a 2002 Jeep Liberty, 3.7L engine, Auto Trans.

I'm getting this grinding noise coming from the front of the vehicle, weird thing though, when I shift to 4-wheel drive the noise goes away. I drove it in front of a mechanic, and his impression is that the front drive shaft is the problem. I'm kinda skeptical, but I did some research and everything seems to point to that conclusion. However I like to know what are your opinions about this.

Bad boots on either end of the front drive shaft will cause all kinds of weird noises but when my boot tore (recessed one near Tcase) the noise got worse when in 4wd under load. Worth a close inspection for tears. Also check the axle CVs while you are at it for tears and play. Maybe intermediate shaft too.

I'm guessing front driveshaft transfer-case end CV! I'll put $10 on it who wants to take me up?

I won't take you up on the bet but I do agree with you :anitoof:The CV joint on the transfer case end of the drive shaft is the culprit.

I bet someone a dozen donuts once regarding this same issue. Won the bet but never got my donuts : happy175:

Is it possible to change the CV joint rather than the whole drive shaft, and if so, how much would something like that cost.

Here is a stupid question, is it possible to drive the vehicle with the front drive shaft removed?

LOL, engage 4wd all you like, you'll just still be rear wheel drive!

Before you remove the driveshaft shake it back and forth. The bad CV joint will have a lot of play.

With a set of wrenches, snap ring pliers, and a BFH, replacing the Libby CV joints is a bit messy, but not an overly difficult job. If you have any qualms about it, though, look for a local driveshaft shop and take it to them. A good shop'll be ready to hand the driveshaft back to you in less than an hour and prob not charge you much more than you'd pay for the parts.
