GAS TANK Remedy 2005 Jeep Liberty

Thanks Rowlette for the info concerning the recall for
unprotected gas tanks on the Jeep liberty. Has anyone
here had the tow hitch installed by the dealer? I read
online that in some cases the dealer has told people
that the vehicles are safe without the protection and
others are told the parts are not available or put on
a long waiting list.

Has anyone installed a skid plate along with the recall dealer
installed tow hitch? I am definately concerned about this
issue. I am going to see our local dealer today and want
to be armed with as much information as possible.

I have a OEM hitch (factory tow package) and gas tank skid and never had the recall done. I was told it didn't apply to mine.

I am having trouble expressing myself this morning.

Looked, installed and done
I also run a Kilby gas tank skid on the 03 now ( took it off the 04 )
When I was looking at the 03 it didn't have one on, told them to do it and they did
05 had one of those cheap ones on and took to dealership and no issues
The 04 told them it wasn't on the road at the moment, took photos of the rear undercarriage, they looked it over and gave me one to take home and install.
Said not to tell anyone, but.........

Only cases I have heard was if extremely rusty or dealer said the original one was fine
( or overseas )
But nothing more

05 Liberty Feb 7. Later on i'll add the skid plate. Thanks so much all for your
data. After i have had this Liberty for a while i hope to be able to contribute
to this forum. It just takes a while to learn all the ins and outs of a new
unfamiliar vehicle. I really appreciate the help that i have received in a very

Cover For the Recall Hitch

What's the dimension of the recall hitch installed by the Dealers?
I want to buy a cover for my Grandson's KJ, but can't remember if it's 1-1/4" or 2".

2 inch , regular tow hitch they installed on all that came with the Tow Package.

I would assume it Is the same as the factory hitch which is 2"

Having ours installed Feb 7, will let you know then. I would bet 2"
