Front end noise

I have a knocking noise in the front end passenger side that sounds a lot like a CV going out. Crawled under and the CV boots don't have any tears and appear to be tight. There is a little movement on the inner CV where it connects to the intermediate shaft. My question is could and does the intermediate shaft wear down in the Liberty? I'm the second owner and so I don't know if the half shaft has been replaced with cheap china crap and a loose fit is causing the knock.

I've seen intermediate shafts without almost any splines on it from wear/rust etc
So yes they wear down. Only way to tell is to pull everything apart
