SO I was pretty much given a 2003 Jeep liberty. I noticed very faint white smoke and almost a rubbery burning smell, smoke is very faint, only noticeable if I run it around town and stop and open the hood, its not noticeable if its running and the hood is open, not burning oil. It did have a leaking main radiator hose but that just needed a new clamp. Temp never goes above half way, and all the fluid levels are normal. I did spill a bit when filling the coolant but I have driven it over 120 miles so I am assuming that should of burnt off by now? Also check engine light came on today, not sure if its a different issue or if they are related. It runs fine though, sounds great, so I have no idea where to start. I also have no idea about how well it has been taken care of.

For a 2003, you can get the CEL code by doing the "key dance". Off-on-off-on-off-on. The code(s) will flash in the odometer.

Doubt they are related, as CEL stuff is typically more sensor/electronic/emissions stuff but may as well check it.

I take the smoke is only coming from under the hood not out the tailpipe.
You could do a rad pressure test to see if there any further leaks.
Also because of the spilt HOAT coolant, that I hope you used, that running some water over the spilt area may flush that out then.
Burning rubber reminds me of an oil leak, and the valve covers are often suspect when it comes to oil leaks.
Using a paper towel at the back side or along the valve covers bottoms, when cooler, will give you an idea if the covers are leaking.
Yes get the code or codes from HJ's recommended key trick.

Took to the store and back, and at night its easier to the see the smoke, the smoke is coming up dead center of the engine, and definitely smells like oil. I feel like its Karma for immediately pulling the aftermarket radio out of my ranger and putting it in the Jeep, Jeep had a crappy aftermarket one the old owner put in and my Ranger wont be back on the road anytime soon.

problem found but not solved oxygen sensor smoking, well not the censor, whoever had this before must of stripped it and glued a new censor in, and the excess glue is burning off.

Should be able to have an exhaust shop weld a new bung in for it.

So I scraped allot of that adhesive they used off the censor and took it up my property road in the mud to check my trail cams, got stuck, put her in 4-wheel and went to take off, and coolant sprayed out my grill. I found the spot at the top where the last owner tried that JB Weld plastic patch junk and it finally broke loose. (Don't know how I didn't noticed it before). Luckily it is at the top of the tank so babying it back to those keeping the rpms low and I didn't loose any more. New Radiator will be here Wednesday. Between what this thing cost me, new brakes/roaters all the way around, and a new radiator I am only $500 in so I wont complain, just chip away as I find things.

spark plugs as well.

change the P/S fluid as well.

Belt was just changed, still looks new, alternator seized and belt broke so they replaced it right before they sold it to me, the new alternator still had SKU stickers on it.

I got everything except the rust issues fixed, runs good, a few cold mornings the remote starter came in handy. They didn't strip the O2 censors they put in the wrong size and used the goop to seal it. Now to remove the cancerous rust and put on new tires.
