I'm really sorry that you haven't heard from me for a while but hospital stays, holidays and trips to the UK have got in the way.
Just to say that since adding a Facom product to the antifreeze (similar to a Holts product whose name I've forgotten, and an alternative to Bars Leaks) I have had no steam at all and the Cherokee is running really well.
I suspect that it may be a crack in the EGR cooler but if I have to keep adding this stuff to the cooling system every once in a while I'll settle for that!
Many thanks to everyone who has helped out.

Hope you are on the mend
Well it has been a while but I c an now report that having put a locally bought (SW France) leak sealer by Facom in the expansion tank and run the Jeep for about 20 minutes, the grey smoke has stopped. That was several weeks ago - my Wife uses the Jeep frequently and has seen no sign of grey smoke even if it doesn't get used for a while.

We'll maybe never know what was causing it but I suspect that there is a crack in the EGR cooling jacket. Fingers crossed!
