I started installing a Truetrac in my girlfriends 05 Liberty 2wd and got to bolting up the ring gear to the new diff and found that the bolts don't fit all the way in the diff holes. The OEM bolts appear to have a taper near the head that hits. Look like either new bolts are required or the holes need opened up about 1mm. Anybody have experience with this issue?

Yeah get new bolts, you never re-use ring gear bolts.

I hadn't planned on using the old bolts but the factory bolts don't seem to fit. Didn't know if there was a common aftermarket place to get them or if maybe the dealer has different bolts that would actually fit. Got to get it done so I guess I'll take it over to the dealer and check jeep vs dakota bolts see if anything works if not find a drill it out some.

I think there are two different length bolts available, or was thinking there were, one for earlier years one later.
Call or contact them, do not try and drill

The length of the bolt is fine it's the diameter of the hole in the new diff it's about 1mm smaller than the oem diff. I've got new bolts that should be here tomorrow if they have the same issue I'll just have the machine shop enlarge the hole a little.

Did you get the bolts from Eaton? If not you could be voiding your warranty and/or covering up a manufacturer defect they would like to know about.

I would sure contact Eaton before I modified a brand new (expensive) part.

Edit: Beat me to it, Mark!

The 04 parts fiche shows sae and metric sizes for the ring gear bolts.
May also be in some 05's ?
Is there a difference in the DTT for early/late models?

I've spoken with Summit Racing and Eaton several times now it looks like they only make a single diff for all years. In 05 Dodge/chrysler/Jeep switched from standard to Metric and the Metric bolts are just a hair bigger. Eaton doesn't supply or offer bolts and isn't sure of the exact fix people are going through but they had no issues with with me taking it to a machine shop and having the first 1/4" of the hole enlarged by .5-1mm but no machine shop around me wanted to touch it. I talked to the guys at Yukon and the recommended the pre 05 bolts which seem to fit perfect but the threads don't catch quite as good. They will barely take more than the specified torque without the bolt threads giving. I found his out today and ended up chucking an 05 bolt in the drill press and using a dremel and sanding wheel to turn down the raised shoulder until it fit. The 05 bolt feels a lot more solid when torquing it.

If I had to do it again I would have just taken the bolts to a machine shop and had them turned a little or else replaced the ring and pinion with pre 05 parts so I knew the bolts perfectly matched.
