Does your Libby...

Hey All-

I've got a few "Does your Libby" questions. I just passed 11K and I wanted to double check that some of the things I am noticing while driving the Libby aren't actual problems. So here goes, does your libby...

1) make a loud bumping noise when the rear axle goes over a large bump in the road? Mine is more of a loud thud, definitely noticeable, but only on fairly large bumps, nothing out of the ordinary on small ones. Sometimes I hear almost what is the sound of change jingling also when this thud can be heard. Can anyone tell me what this is and if it's normal?

2) ****** the driveshaft/torque/throttle after the rear axle goes over a really big bump? This is different from #1 as after going over a really large bump (i'm talking a big bump on a highway road at 60+ mph), the transmission seems to back off on the power to the driveshaft just for 1-3 seconds, then returns to normal power. I figured this was some sort of protective feature of the transmission to avoid overstressing the driveshaft if the axle shifts a lot when going over a bump, but wasn't sure and wanted to ask.

#2 is your ESP/Traction Control System preparing for a loss of control, so it slows the engine down. Normal.

#1 "Jingle" noise *may* be the same thing... TCS Kicking in by pulsating the brakes to slow the Jeep down.

ESP, now that has to be it. I never used to notice it very much, but I thought it has been more pronounced recently. Though I've also been driving a lot more lately, went from 6500 to 11K miles since mid-October. Thanks Marlon, at least I don't have to worry that there's something wrong with the axle/differential. New York highways have a LOT of bumps...

It looks like you're coming from a car.

You sure your driving isn't becoming more "spirited" as you get used to driving the Jeep and becoming more comfortable with throwing it around a little bit more?

I guess "spirited" is an appropriate term

I am coming from a 4 cyl camry, though I don't throw that one around very much because it's oooooold. I do drive the jeep a bit more aggressively (in metro New York, you have to) but nothing I would say is excessive. Generally keep the RPM's under 3K during acceleration and usually not a problem because the 3.7 makes a lot of torque. That's probably what's setting the ESP off, the combination of the bumps and the amount of power it's adding to keep the thing at highway speed.

Now that I read your post again, my '06 made that thud. Is it a squishy sounding thud? I never did find out what the "thud" was or if it was normal.

I usually keep it right at 3k when accelerating too. If Im just around in town I keep it under 2500.

Depending on how hard youre hitting these bumps, a thud could be normal. You may want to check the balljoint on the upper control arm though.

Cool so it's sounding more and more like these are just standard jeep quirks and I should stop whining about them. Good point about the upper ball joints, I will have them checked the next time I bring it to the shop for mx.

How'd you get ESP on a 2005? It wasn't available until 2006.

Nah, j/k, I didn't know. I thought maybe it was a standard thing on the Limited in '05. I really have no clue. I just thought the symtoms sounded the same and hoped that was my problem.lol
