Hello, I've been searching on here for an hour and cant find the answer.

I have a '06 Silver Liberty Renegade and I want to take the Renegade roof rack off and paint it black.

I cant figure out how the plastic pieces come off.

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!

there's star head bolts or something or another that go through that you loosen until the clamps drop open then it just lifts off

wish i could be more help, it's been awhile since i took mine off permanently

Thanks, I tried taking off the star screws. I tried twisting the bar and pulling it and got nowhere.

I wasnt sure if the star screws were the first place to start, or should I be trying to pop-off the front and rear plastic bases.

I took mine off a few weeks ago. Luke inspired me to paint mine black as well. Pry apart the halves of the mounts. Gently. Under there are two bolts that secure the rack to the roof. Once the rails are unbolted, take them off, take out the wee phillips head screw that is on the inboard side of the bar and take the plastic ends off of the tube. Reassembly is the reverse. Use a 1.5" putty knife or something with a broad, soft edge to do the prying so as to not marr the plastic too much.

Thanks Ian,

I did try and pry the top of the split plastic pieces with a screwdriver. I felt like they werent going to budge or maybe even break. I'll give it another shot with a putty knife.

How well did they snap back together?

It always makes me laugh when they over-design things like this. They really could have made it easier.

Thanks again

They went back together nicely. There's three little "s" style body clips. Just a note, it is the outboard side of the plastic that isn't bolted down. Put the putty knife in the groove that separates the two halves and push towards the outboard side. They should pop off quite easily.

PTSB's got it covered ... just be firm but gentle ...I know "That's what she said" :D

You will have to play a little when you put them back together ie getting the two halves lined up to get the same seal you had from the factory, but it will go back

Cheers,

P.S. Those Torx screws just hold the aluminum tube to the plastic end cap.

Torx screws?
It's an '02, but ThunderbirdJunkie's had 8mm bolts.
Alternatively, you could remove the rails completely for true "baller" status :D

At any rate, here's a picture to help illustrate what's been said. It's an '02 rail, but can't imagine them being much, if any, different in terms of how the ends are

we're talkin about different spots ... y'know the 2 (on each rail tube) that hold the tube to the plastic? Those are the torx (star) screws Congested was talking about trying to remove above I think.
