Noticed that the paint was worn off the shock...looks like I have some coil contact there?

What would cause it? Is it an issue?

Maybe the boot is rubbing? I'd say it was from installing but it should've rusted by now since it's been a year.

I'd say its the boot, kicked part way over side ways
Things are a huge pain and no real need for them anyways
