Quick question...I have a 2004 Liberty and the cat is fine at the moment but does the 2004 Libby require the $1,200 cat or the cheaper after market one?

You can use an aftermarket, 49-state certified version. California has their own rules.

Check out the Walker cats from our supporting vendor RockAuto.com. I bought both left and right sides from them and they fit perfectly on my '03.

If one goes bad make sure you replace both,one old and one new cat can and often creates more issues.
