I am thinking of having a Westfalia type pop top tent or Earthroamer style tent installed on our Liberty.
I was looking at the various manufacture of roof top tents (Like ARB and other along those lines)
But I would like to be able to enter and exit the tent without getting out of the vehicle.
I would completely remove the rear seats when only two people are using the
Liberty to gain all available extra space for storage.

I figure that I can build something along the lines of the XV-JP Rubicon based Jeep for a lot less than the $100,000.00 plus price tag.

I lost the link, but some guy on a forum took an XJ and put a VW van pop-tent fiberglass roof on it. Had custom canvas sewn to make the tent walls coming up out of the roof.

He fabbed a rollcage that fit nicely within the vehicle, and then used that as a frame for a hammock.

It was pretty badass IMO.

That's pretty cool....you'd need some very heavy duty coils for that job.:)

This is one such vehicle from American Expedition Vehicles.

Why not just buy a Westfalia and mod it into a 4x4?

Actually, I almost bought a 1990 VW Westfalia Syncro (Factory 4X4) instead of the KJ. But when we got to the sellers home, he said that he changed his mind and decided to keep it!
And, they are not cheap! To this day they sell for upwards of of $28000.00 for a 1990!

The red one is awesome! At the time they came out I was working to a VW/Audi dealership and those sold for as high as $50000.00 from the dealer.
You could get them with factory front and rear 12000 Lbs. winches, etc.

The red one... Also known as a "TriStar. There are 5 of those here in Metro Vancouver.
Two of them have Porsche 3.6 liter flat six engines fitted!
One has a Subaru WRX 450 HP flat 4 cylinder in it!
I am not kidding!
All three are Effing FAST!

Cheers

I know a guy that has one just like the one in your second picture Ryan, his is two tone brown but otherwise exactly the same. He brings it out every year to our hamfest to camp the weekend.

I used to be a perts driver for a W/Audi dealership and drove a bog standard '87 Vanagon 40-50 per week. I also got to take it home from time to time to help fellow employees move, and took it camping a few times!
That two wheel (Rear) drive van would go anywhere!
Including offroad.
Infact it kept up with most of my 4X4 owning friends.
The Syncros are even better, especially if you have a diesel as a stock power plant.
I've been in touch with a few suppliers of pop top tent manufactures, but I haven't received any replies from them yet.
I'm also looking at an older VW Microbus Westfalia tent (1970's model VW) for the top of our KJ.
Naturally Jennifer thinks I'm completely bare foot in the head for wanting to take a can opener to the top of our Jeep!
What the heck!
If the right components can be found at the right price...

I've seen similar conversions done professionally on Mitsubishi Delicia vans, Chrysler Caravans, Land Rovers, and E350 Ford 4X4 Vans.
The Fords are really sweet!
