I bought my 2003 Liberty Sport used this past summer. Since then I've put about 10,000 miles on it. Nothing major has gone wrong, until now. The brakes have always been as smooth as silk, I realize anti-lock brakes pulse, but this is getting annoying. Now anytime I'm doing 50 mph or faster, or I'm braking while going down hill, the brakes pulse really bad. Rotors checked out fine, so I figure the pulsing has got to be the anti-lock. It's hard to tell, but it seems to be coming from the rear discs rather than front. Has this happened to anyone else? The Liberty currently has 50,000 miles on it, and has new brake pads, at least thats what the dealer told me when I purchased it. Any ideas and comments are appreciated.

Checked out fine as in taken off, and checked for warpage/runout etc? or just visually inspected.

I dunno what it is, but my 02 always seems to warp it's rotors, no matter how nice i am to them.

My OEM rotors are slightly warped right now....I can notice the wheel shaking when under heavy braking.

If it's more of a "shaking" type of thumping, thats indicative of warped rotors. Depending on how worn out they are and how warped they are, you might be able to get away with having them resurfaced, until you can get around to actually replacing them.

If it's more of a "banging" thumping, thats indicative of missing "anti rattle" clips. These can pop back off very easily if not installed properly (and they can be a real bugger to put properly).

If you're at 50K and on the OEM rotors, I'd say you might want to go ahead and replace them. Thats about average milage for an automatic vehicle, and not to bad at all if you ask me for a KJ, given the weight of the vehicle.

Even though Chrysler rotors are known for warping quite easily, you don't know the driving style of the previous owner. They could have been a pedal rider.

It's deffinitely a thumping, not shaking. If it is the clips, is it something I can do myself? How do you find and/or replace them?

It's been a while since i've had to do brake work....lemme dig through my notes and see what I can come up with for ya.

If you've got basic mechanic skills, it shouldn't be a hard job at all for you.
