Hi,

The pads and rotors are new, and braking on the road is good.

However, during off-road trips—especially on steep climbs—I feel like I need to press the brake pedal very hard for the vehicle to stop.

What could be the reason?

I'm not an expert on the subject. But, assuming good pads and rotors, and no mechanical problems, brake fluid might be a guess. Very very slowly, brake fluid can absorb moisture, which, via some physics stuff, degrades brake performance. Or rather, the transfer of hydraulic force is degraded.

Perhaps master cylinder problem?

But, most never think of the brake fluid for decades and brakes work fine.

Heat buildup can cause brake fade, did you buy quality pads or cheap ones?

Ooh good point. Add riding brakes while steep downhill, your suggestion probably makes more sense, perhaps glazed rotors too.
