2002 liberty Renegade v6 3.7l

front disc rear drum No abs

this problem has been happening for a few months intermittently
when first starting out, brakes work good, sudden stops and gradual stops work like normal
but after 10-15mins of driving, the gradual stops still work fine, but if you then push the pedal harder, no increase in braking power, pedal is still firm with pressure and feels like the normal pedal, just the lack of the extra stopping power

font pads still have around 10mm remaining(ceramic pads put on a few years ago), rear shoes at the lowest tapered top edge have 4mm

tried testing the power booster by pumping the brakes with the engine off till firm pedal then, held pressure and started jeep, pedal depressed about 1 inch which i believe shows the power booster works

since noticing the problem, replaced rear wheel cylinders as 1 had a very small leak inside the wheel cylinder, hoped that would fix it, had the brake lines flushed, then i bleed them a second time

I was first thinking brake fade, caused by glazed over pads or rotors, so I was going to buy new pads and rotors,

other possible causes include bulging brake lines, haven't noticed that (if suggested to replace the rubber lines, any steel braided lines avail?)

another possible cause is early MC failure, however the times the brakes lack the extra stopping power the pedal dose not fall to the floor and the pedal still has the same feel, just not stopping, also since it has been going on a few months, I figure the MC would have failed by now

just seeing what you guys might think is the problem

JBA sells DOT approved stainless braided brake lines, there not cheap but firmed up my brake feel.

A few other things to check is the front rotor thickness, close to min specs will reduce brakes, same goes for the rear drums. If the rear drums are close to max(or beyond) reduced braking will result,as will improperly adjusted rear drums.Look at the front rotors(and drums) for a dark blue color or visible dark spots which indicate overheating which is caused by improperly adjusted rear brakes or heavy braking.

do you remember the site you got the lines from?

do they have stock sized brake lines, or do I measure the ones I have and order, thanks

I will check the front rotors color when my wife get's home my but I think they where of the dark bluish color and original rotors on its 2nd set of replacement pads, so they could have been turned 1x-2x so that is a good possibility, the drums have not been turned and where shinny on the inside, and they are on the original shoes, a little tight pulling them off but nothing to hard

and how to check for the improperly adjusted rear drums, since the drum is shinny on the inside and snug to pull off of the shoes I would think they might be adjusted ok, will check the thickness off the drums, or should I tighten the star wheel a turn or so and see if that helps

thanks for you help,

yeah, so pads and rotors like I originally thought shame pads still had plenty of life left

anyone use the performance friction pads, was looking to get them and Wagner rotors
the pads are semi metallic so possible noise, I can live with that if they are less prone to brake fade, or I could get the Wagner Thermo Quiet® Brake Pad Set ceramics if think they will do fine

I like the looks of those lines look sweet, I will try pads and rotors first, then those if needed, and even if not, might be a nice treat to get this summer

KJ's come with ceramic front pads right from the factory. The braided lines JBA sells are made by Classic Tube, they have stock lengths also and lifted lengths.Bought as a kit so a direct bolt on.

Just install new rotors, pads, hardware for the from and then new rear shoes, hardware(very important),and drums for the rear.To adjust the rear just turn the star wheel until slight drag is felt and then back off 2 clicks.

Brakes are not something you want to halfa$$ or skimp on.

yeah I just was looking at the hard ware kits from napa(no carquest here), they seem more complete then at autozone or advancedauto

since I have never done shoes before I will get a mechanic to help with those

I will get drums and shoes from autozone, no one Carry's lifetime drums but the lifetime shoes at autozone are 1/3 the price compared to napa or advancedauto

thanks again for all your help

I'd stay clear of any brake pads/shoes from places like advance auto or autozone, just junk, more so for there brake shoes(nothing but problems with them, noisy).Napa's Adaptive One brake shoes are pretty kicka$$ and well worth the price.

the adaptive one brake shoes are not showing up at napa
they have the Brake Shoes - Rear, Ultra Premium which I was looking at first
but I am guessing they are re-shoe since they want a core charge

I already pick out from napa
1 disc brake hardware kit (for both wheels)
1 drum hardware kit (for both wheels)
1 right rear wheel self adjuster kit
1 left rear wheel self adjuster kit
2 caliper housing bolts (just incase)
soon to get there
2 drums
1 ultra premium shoe

from advance auto (I have a 50$ off coupon :D )
2 wagner rotors
1 wagner ThermoQuiet; Ceramic pad

wish list
steel brake lines

some money but then every thing should be good for a long while

Dont skimp out on the brakes the best pads and rotors will cost you but well worth it. I just did mine on Sunday little over $300.00 for parts with my discount but all new part as well as hardwear and parking brake. My brakes would fade too before I did them. Check the calaper boots before compressing them (if you reuse them) if not replace them and I would replace or rebuild both rear wheel brake cylinders and not just the one.

already replaced both rear wheel cylinders since the one was slightly wet inside the boot, followed the advice of changing both, it was the first thing I tried

what kind of pads/ rotors did you get/ did you get drums and shoes too for 300?

If anyone wants to buy me new rear rotors when the time comes I'll be happy, there only $400 each for the rotors:eek:,better off getting the whole new kit for $750 that includes everything(pads,calipers,rotors,e-brake,and backing plates).

Glad to hear you did both wheel cylinders.
Mine is disc at all fours and yes that was rotors pads and calapers as well as parking brake shoes. I used Cmax gold ceramic pads but I am the director and master tech at work and I get a big discount from our supplier.

yikes
in a few years when I am no longer paying/borrowing 1200 a week for my sons therapy, maybe then,

but for now 65$ each rotor is about my limit
so all in all, for disc hardware, drum hardware, right and left parking brake hardware, new wagner Thermo-quite ceramic pads, wagner rotors, Napa drums, Napa ultra premium ceramic shoe, cost is 432 minus my 50$ off pads and rotors 382, then 7% off napa with AAA discount (not sure if it works in the store, if not online) end up being $365 not too bad, will be well worth it, and I didn't go the cheapest route, but around the middle ground unless you take tjkj rotors cost, then I went way cheap

then I just need to save up for the new steel braid brake lines
