Brake issues mainly in the rain???

I jumped in the heap yesterday and pulled out of my parking lot, when I hit the brakes to wait for passing traffic, the brakes grabbed really hard then the brake pedal went right to the floor. When I started away again, there was a weird scrapping grinding noise coming from the right hand side. The grabbing brakes usually happens when the KJ is sitting in the rain, then when I drive it the first thing in the morning, the grabbing happens. This time the pedal fading away is something never experienced before. Weird thing is that the brakes worked fine today???

Anyone have this happen before?

The grabbing brakes sounds like the pads grinding off a little bit of surface rust after the rain. Pretty normal. I bet if you look at your rotors in the morning after a rain storm you'll see light rust on the normally polished surface of the rotor. Drive it and get out and I'm willing to bet it's shiny again.

As for the pedal going to the floor... dunno. Somebody else will probably fill that one in.

Have you checked brake fluid level?

The breaks can go to the floor if the piston seals in the master cylinder are bad, or the valve doesn't hold, this causes fluid to flow back past the valves, back to the reservoir; thus pedal goes to the floor. It happened to me on a 1984 Pontiac Phoenix. It was an intermittent thing, but it ended up being; me needing a master cylinder. There should really be no other reason for the pedal to go to the floor, unless there is air in the lines, or your shooting fluid out of a break line, fitting, or plunger seal in a caliper. I doubt a rubber brake line can get the equivalent of an Aneurysm, and the fluid just bubbles in the hose...

It has something to do with the ABS system for sure, but there was no light on in the dash. Today the brakes work and sound fine.............

It's the sudden grabbing then no pedal that has me concerned.

ok next time it happens then, check the reservoir. fluid has to be going somewhere, if it is out of the system, then your brakes wouldnt return to normal. if the reservoir is low when this happens, then returns to normal, you have another issue.

No ABS light does not mean there is not a problem with the ABS system.The biggest fault with a ABS system,right behind bad wheel sensors,is messed up communication from/to the ABS system.I'd have to say there's at least almost 50% of ABS equipped vehicles have a ABS problem but they do not know since the communication system is screwed up and does not light up the littl;e light,a very common issue.

Did the pedal vibrate at all or was it just to the floor?

The pedal didn't do the anti-lock pulse if that's what you are asking Jeepjeepster. I was just rolling up to the edge of the main road from my parking lot, when I just stepped on the brake as normal, then it(pedal) just dropped to the floor. There was a terrible noise from the r/r and then the pedal came back to normal. It wasn't till I hit the highway and drove about 35 miles and came to a traffic light , and guess what....no pedal again....but it came back just as fast. The fluid is fine, there are no leaks.

Today on the wa to work, the brakes are just as normal as say...last week....I don't understand what the heck happened????????????????

Update to the "brake issue":

When I took the wheels off the KJ today, I had a look at the rear brake pads. When I poked my head around the backside of the caliper, what was there poking out between the rotor and dust shield....yeah Mr.Brake Pad.

The friggin' pad separated from the backing plate, and was hanging there ready to drop out......that explains the sudden grab then brake pedal fade.

Stupid Monroe brake pads......they could have got me or someone else killed.
I will get pics of the disemboweled brake pad tomorrow.

I should get on Monroe about this, I mean come on, these were just replaced a year ago. To quote Homer Simpson "now you got a lawsuit on your hands".

Yep seen that happen with duralast pads(never last) and wearever pads,very cheap junk there.
