Best exhaust setup for the KJ?

Good evening, everyone.

I’d like to ask you a few questions about the exhaust on the 3.7. I use my vehicle for off-roading and I’d like to improve the engine sound. Do you have any tips or recommendations?

I tried running it without any mufflers, but the sound is insanely loud… you can’t even have a conversation inside haha!

sounds good imo, rumbles on start and hard acceleration and relatively quiet during normal driving vs other aftermarket options

30s - biggest dynomax super turbo
40s+ - stock/oem

You aren’t going to realize any major improvements with exhaust upgrades on the 3.7. You’d need to do a lot of work, starting with headers and probably custom cams for any gains. I think regearing is the best way to get more power.

My Liberty runs on 40” tires, solid axles, and fully modified suspension. Nothing is stock except for the engine and transmission. I use it exclusively for off-road, it’s not a daily driver.

I don't have one handy of ours, but here's an install video from YouTube with some sound clips at the end that I found -

That one is on a fresh install. If you need a long-term sound clip, I can get one of ours; it's a few years old now.

I have a $30-40 stainless 2.5" 'see thru' muffler from rockauto. Sound great imho. Stock tailpipe, but onto my 2nd one.

Cool do you like exhaust drone while crawling up a knarly hill in 4lo? sound increase does not necessarily mean increased power… Again not much if any gain over stock system without more mods.

Cut the old muffler out and install a Thrush 17715 muffler. With the connector pipe, adapter and clamps it cost me less than $100. Nice deep rumble but not too obnoxious on the highway (although my wife thinks it's too loud) and I like how it sounds off road in 4low. I previously installed a Flowmaster clone muffler (Xlerator VX2541) - it wasn't just too loud, it was a really unpleasant sound - I think those sound great on a GM V8 but not on our 3.7.

I went with the dynomax super turbo system - if you do go this route make sure you get the correct tailpipe as it is a larger diameter and has mandrel bends, so it actually sounds better than just the muffler with the oem tailpipe. System has a nice burble around town, but is not annoying on the highway.

I have looked carefully at that tailpipe... OEM is nicely mandrel bent like that one, so I didn't bother

Pertronix shorty headers & a Magnaflow exhaust - nothing crazy, but a nice little rumble and a smoother power band on the torque side of things. Not particularly inexpensive though.

We had one of those on the KJ for a number of years...rust and trail damage made my son remove it and install the MBRP. Fit was great though, my son had it installed in no time just backing the rear up on to ramps.

BRExhaust kit installed. Perfect fit and almost no sound inside cabin (though I had to supply my own nuts). Quiet exhaust makes it much easier to detect other noises like tires, bearings, u-joints, etc. Maybe it's a little stuffy at high RPM runs compared to the Dynomax super turbo but at cruising speed it's blissfully dead silent on the highway.

Some specifics: the 2 1/4" OD inlet necks down to something like a 2 1/8" OD where it crimps onto the inner tubes but still better than the walker quiet flow which necked down to something like 2" OD.

I will say, however, that I had a really hard time getting one of these kits from Magnaflow that wasn't damaged from shipping or had some residual weld slag in it that made metallic noises. So their QA/QC leaves something to be desired. Good customer service and good warranty with the SS kit though and you can also get these through Napa or AZ
