Beat up fender plastics...

My plastic fenders, bumpers, and door moldings look pretty shot. Granted that Jeep in all their wisdom decided to use a dark grey plastic instead of black, but mine are quite oxidized and scratched up.

Has anyone tried painting / buffing / sanding / spraying / rhinolining / whatevering their KJ Sport plastics w/ any good luck? Do tell, and post pics if ya got em.

a damp cloth and some black shoe dye does wonders bringing the plastics back to life.

I plan on doing it with my flares and bumper eventually, but may be using Herculiner instead since i can get it pretty cheap at work

problem with bedliners.. it only (properly) sticks to painted surfaces. with our sport plastic flares and bumpers you should have them professionally painted firsrt then bedline but i know of a few who have gotten away with just straight bedline on the plastic dont know how it turned out though

I had mine done in a shop more than a year a go. The colour is an exact match.

Be sure to buy some fender flair and bumper clips of eBay if you are going to remove them for prep & painting. Stealership clips are going to cost their weight in GOLD.

they will look like new or almost new but they will go back to ugly over time
paint and bed liners will do the same but you have to repaint them
which cost more money and time

03CDKJ had his done by LINE-X several years ago and his is a Sport model , staying nice and black yet, not peeling off at all, actually when we cut them to install his bumper I tried to peel the stuff off anf couldn't

But proper prep was key,Line-X sprayers do know there stuff.Plus Line-X will stick to just about anything,it takes about 3 seconds for that stuff to fully cure after the 2 chemicals mix about 6" from the end of the applicator gun.

Thank god nobody has suggested getting a plastic chrome finish put on them notcool.gif

I just spent the afternoon polishing up my Libby. I used AmorAll & a rag for the plastic fenders and think they look pretty good. The shoe polish idea should work well too. Hmmm...can't seem to wipe off the deep trail scratches though Maybe a belt sander

There is a 2005 or 2006 KJ here in town that has chrome bumpers and fender flares, 22 inch wheels fitted with P nothing tires... Wait for it...

bedlined my fender flares(and beltline/OEM bumpers) mid March 2002 and they still look great,granted I did have to respray one part of a flare due to a idiot that couldn't drive.

This type of stuff just does not seem to work for us ,the southern end of the US
it seems that when ever people do it they end up all peeled off and looking bad after a few trail rids
I know that 1 good brush with a sapling and they are done

That's what happens when you use cheap junk like Durabak,Plastickote,and Hurculiner.

A lot of rigs here have bed lined beds....from what I can tell they hold up well. Probably used Line x....(AKA good stuff)...

I dont know what they use
I use fender washers and 1/4" bolts to put the flares back on
I dont give a rats a$$ what they look like as long as they are on
and as soon as the move is over and my finger heals I may get back on the search for tube fenders

Applying heat to the faded plastic makes it change color
it will get darker
start in a some what out of sight area to get a feel
for it and just apply heat evenly so as to darken the plastic
