planning on armor all or shoe polish in the next couple of days here. whoever HAS used this method-do i need to do any special pre/procedures to ensure an even coat or is it pretty much 'tard proof?

With shoe polish or Armorall, just make sure it's clean and to spread it evenly...

If you use the shoe dye (not polish) method, make sure you apply it to a damp towel first before applying it to the plastics... otherwise it'll leave streaks. :(
