might be picking up a parts jeep sometime in the future, and am wondering if anyone's ever retrofitted the stock sunroof into a copy that didn't have one from the factory?

You have to swap the entire roof and headliner. interior panels will need to be removed so that you can install the drain tubes for it. windshield will need to be removed so that you can access the pinch weld there to swap the roof skin.

Swapping the roof skin isn't exactly a viable optioin. You can buy a replacement skin for a good enough price to swap onto it, but in all honesty, the entire swap isn't worth the effort.

jeepcomj: so you're saying the roof skins are different if you have a sunroof? if so I guess that could make sense. I saw in the external thread references to the roof ridges being different lengths between the two.

they are different with different crossmember locations IIRC. you would have to reskin it to fit the sunroof in, and you must have a sunroof headliner....the non-sunroof headliner is completely different and does not offer enough space to put a sunroof in.

Somewhere between being sane and insane!
The roof skin is the cheap part, untill you have it installed and painted. The liner is very pricey unless you find a good used on.A new one runs about $2000 for some reason but no longer even have them listed for purchase anymore.
