Hey, so I have a 2006 Jeep Liberty Sport manual transmission and I'm getting an issue that just started a few days ago. I can't figure out what it is.

The issue only happens when I'm accelerating and it happens between 3000 to 4000 RPM's the sound sounds like a wind up toy and it sounds like its coming from the middle of the dashboard. Can't be heard from the outside and is not heard when idling I put the car in park and moved the throttle cable with the hood up and the issue doesn't happen.

When I get up to speed it doesn't happen either. Happens with the radio turned all the way down. No shakes no pulls or anything I just can't seem to figure out what it is...

    Any ideas?

The sound never seems to be coming from under the hood.

Have you checked the rear CV on the front driveshaft yet?
Easy and cheap fix if you find it bad

There should be a rubber boot covering the rear CV on the driveshaft
Most times by 70-80,000 miles that are pretty much gone allowing moisture, dirt etc into the CV
They will make some strange noises at times
But of course its when you are moving

if you find it bad easy to repair and parts from www.driveshftparts.com are reasonable

CV on driveshaft looks good. Felt it just to make sure but no cracks
CV looks good. Felt the boot to check for cracks and I didn’t see/feel anything.

I uploaded the sound im getting to my YouTube account. The best way I can describe it is that it’s a whine but sounds like a wind up toy. I hope this helps.

So an update I went out for a quick drive today just to see where it was coming from. It sounds like it’s coming from the dashboard but it isn’t. When I put my ear closer to my gearshift that’s where the noise seems to be coming from. And I suppose the “wind up toy” noise I’m hearing could be how my clutch plate sounded before I got the clutch replaced. I had work on that about a month ago. That being said, if the sound is coming from my shifter what would that be an indication of? I don’t think it’s synchro because my car doesn’t have problems moving into gear and it only happens when I accelerate.

I hear it. It happens at high revs. I bet you have a vacuum leak on a hose that runs your climate controls.

Glad you could hear it, too much rock and roll in small bars in the 70s has caused my hearing to become less than it should be. Plus and the fact I am old ! ;)

honestly I thought I had air in the system and I did just replace some of the tubes any other ways to check? I really hope it’s not the gearbox but at the same time I think that’s covered with my clutch warranty.

It does sound like a vacuum leak but at high rpms the vacuum would be at its lowest so that doesnt make sense.

right, and when I’m in gears 4-6 I don’t hear anything and I floored it in 6th gear past 3000 rpms and I didn’t hear it.

Any chance it could be an exhaust leak from the exhaust manifolds, or the connection between the manifold and the downpipe?
When I had an exhaust leak there (which was a ticking noise rather than this hissing), it also sounded like it was coming from inside the center of the dashboard. It would increase at higher RPMs, but while driving at higher speeds all other noises would simply drown it out.

Update: was able to hear it at higher speeds so it’s present in all gears but harder to hear in gears 5&6 unless I floor it. I’m hoping it’s just a mess up based off the clutch repair I had done. Will let you know the finally verdict. I know nothing of transmissions and I don’t want to take the chance.

Did you have the clutch replaced? Does the sound go away with the clutch pushed in and the engine revved up while at speed?

I did about a month ago. I got this Jeep back in July it’s been a laundry list of issues some I can fix like the water pump and others I can’t like this issue.

I let someone else listen to it and they said it sounds like my throw out barring. Which honestly I hope so because I have a warranty on the clutch.

I was wondering about that but I dont believe the throwout bearing is used until the clutch is depressed.

    Update:

just got done with the Jeep and the mechanics are baffled. It was low on transmission fluid but when they put it on the rack there was no leak. They had me test drive it and the problem was gone. I very briefly heard it once above 4000 rpm in 5th gear but didn’t hear it afterward. Seals are good no issues with the casing and I haven’t had fluid leaks prior to the issue so I don’t have puddles or anything. They think maybe it was pressure build up but nothing else to go off of.

I guess I’ll drive it and wait for it to happen again. At least I have a warranty I suppose lol.

You have a warranty on the transmission? Sounds like someone under-filled it....
