A Different Kinda Hatchback problem

While installing a new stereo I managed to botch my new head unit, blow the fuse for all my interior lights and now for some reason my hatch won't latch, it just stays open.

It's currently shut via Duct Tape..


Any ideas on how this came to be...?

I'd start by check the solenoid at the latch and the latch assembly.

I take it that you replaced the fuse and the interior lights are working? If you pull on the handle can you hear the solenoid for the glass clicking?

Have you checked the fuse for the rear glass? Im not sure if its on the same fuse as the interior lights or not.

Yeah it's the same fuse.


I removed the panel covering the inside of the gate and such and climbed on in then had someone else try and push the glass shut and I noticed the little "lock" that secures the gate just wasn't being pushed back enough to actually lock. But no matter how much pressure we applied, on the glass or the lock itself, I couldn't manage to get it locked. However when I just ouch it with my finger it goes with minimal effort..

I'm thinking I may just concede and take it to the local Jeep dealership on Monday..

Unless anyone can suggest anything else.

Oh but yeah the solenoid does click when I pull the handle, so it seems the electrical side is in order.

And as an update:

It turns out my new head unit is perfectly fine, I just messed up with some wiring.

I'll now be cruising to tunes from my Apline ida-X100 \\/

With your rear tail gate glass open?

No, I've managed a clever little rig to close it, only not latched, inside my jeep, so that one can't tell from the outside that it's open-able.

It's sitting in my garage though, and probably won't use it until I go to school Monday. Then after school it's straight to the dealership.

Just out of curiosity but did you pull the rear gate door trim off and look to see if something might be obstructing the glass lock mechanism? Maybe hose the whole door latch/window mechanism down with a can of WD40 and lube 'er up like a 14 year old school girl! (naughty) Who knows, might just unstick the sticky.

Yep, I've got the whole panel off. But nothing appears out of the ordinary.
