I just put a new compressor on my 2004 KJ. Bought an AC Pro recharge kit and followed the instructions exactly. I get PLENTY of icy cold air coming through the vents. I did that this afternoon when it was hot. Drove it home later that night, and while the air always stayed nice and cold, I could hear something odd by the time I got home.

The clutch is kicking on and off frequently, the low pressure line is iced up on the outside (it's been humid here), there's a bunch of water pouring from the evaporator drain, and I heard a slight whirring sound when I got back on to slower side streets. I checked the pressure, and it seemed maybe a tad low, but not bad. Compressor does have oil.

I've read that low refrigerant can cause this. What do you guys think? I'll check the charge again tomorrow when it gets warmer. I filled it in the afternoon, and didn't actually take a drive with it until after midnight.

Somewhere between being sane and insane!
Using those DIY kits you will never get the right amount of refrigerant in the system.Your low of refrigerant and using just a inaccurate low pressure gauge will not give you a accurate way to fill the system.

Yeah, I was wondering about that, but I'm being cheap with it. I'll check the pressures again today, and then rent a proper manifold pressure gauge next week to verify pressures. I kind of figured I was low too.

You won't get a accurate charge with a proper manifold set either. You must evac the system and refill by weight.
