Guys, pulled up on the four wheel drive lever to engage 4H today. It worked perfectly. When I was done, I put the lever back down to 2H and the "part time" light came on and if sounds as if the 4H isn't fully disengaged. I hear a hum/whine when accelerating but if i turn a tight circle it clearly is not in 4H.

Pull the lever to 4H, part time light goes out. Push it back down into 2H, light goes on. go figure.

Suggestions?

I agree with rockymountain. You are going to have to replace the Crank Case Position Sensor to get the dash lights working as they should. I just replaced mine yesterday. They seems to fail with regularity. A couple things that I learned along the way. Place the transfer case in 4 LO and the emergency brake on fully before trying to remove the center console. Once removed and you are looking down at the top of the switch it will have a connector with two wires coming from it. I used a pair of really long nosed pliars and placed them across the long dimension of the plug and squeezed to release the locking tab. Then just a gentle pull and the connector came right off. It took a pretty good tug on the wrench to free the sensor. Working fine now. Russ 2005 Sport

Were you changing between them while moving? You should do it in Neutral at about 5mph.

You do not put it in neutral between 2hi and 4hi. Clearly states in the manual to be moving at any speed up to 55 mph.

That's what I thought, but mine still seemed to get stuck in 4WD part-time when going from 2WD to 4 Fulltime and back. This was when stationary. Doesn't happen when on the move in neutral.

Definitely the transfer case position switch. It's no big deal at all. The whining should be completely unrelated. If you want to test it/temporarily fix it, put the Jeep into 2WD, then unplug the battery for a few seconds, then plug it back in. It should go back to normal, but expect it to start malfunctioning again with a few more pulls of the handle until the switch goes completely dead, whereas you don't get ANY lights. (As mine currently is. They're dummy lights, though, and I know when my Jeep is in 4WD).

That SHOULD only be for 4LO. But hell. Different people do it differently I suppose.

not sure about the whine, but you'll need a new Transfer case position switch.

could you have bothered something while in 4H? You should be able to switch to 4H at any speed under 55 I think. 4 LO is when you need to be crawling and in neutral.

X2

x2 (accept I think it's 45MPH? But that might be specifically for part time 4WD.)

You probably are just noticing the sound because the light is on. I swear I hear things when lights are on myself but I attribute it to paranoia anymore.
