06 Liberty CRD Shifting Issue

Hey guys, my brother has a 2006 Jeep Liberty CRD he bought about two years ago. Recently he was having a shifting issue where it would shift hard in both directions and coming to a stop (like at a stoplight) the jeep would die as if you popped my clutch in a manual car. I did my research for several days then replaced the torque converter, that didn't repair it. (it had been done at the initial recall about 100k ago) I replaced the transmission solenoid and filters in the transmission. That did not fix it either. Check engine light went off, but still no difference in driving. I am at a complete loss on where to go from here. Any suggestions? Basically, hard shifting (up and down) and dying when coming to a complete stop. First and third gear are arguably the worst. Any help would be amazing.
