First time owner of a Jeep product and also my first post. I have found this forum extremely useful!

I have to tell you that I purchased my automatic 04 liberty 4x4 with engine damage. I ended up pulling the motor and then reinstalling it. I’ve only had the chance to drive it a few times then the automatic transmissions selector became difficult to move through out the gear (P,R,N,D,1). During this time of difficulty (about 4 trips to town) it was noticed that on at least one occasion the jeep would not start when turning the key. I’m not sure exactly what I did but it started after a couple attempts (this may have nothing to do with my problem)

Currently the transmission gear select (on the ******) will not move (it’s in neutral)

To trouble shoot - I have disconnected the transmission cable at the transmission. The gear select and cable appears to physically operate correctly while pressing the brake. Everything seems free and easy to move. I can even start it up. The pivot arm on the transmission that the cable connect to wont move.

Is there an electronic circuit that enables the transmission itself to allow the change of gears? I have a fair mechanical knowledge and good electronics background but I’m not sure exactly how my jeep works..

Any help will defiantly be appreciated.

IB.

(welcome)

Hmmm, if the cable and selector move freely but the arm on the ****** is stuck it seems there is something going on internally in the trans. I don't know if there is an electronic component to the shifter that would bind or break that is serviceable - I've not torn my ****** apart.

Did you notice any drivability issues before it got stuck in neutral? Weird shifts, noises, etc?

Our ****** experts are gonna have to kick in here...

Yes, the cable and selector move freely but the arm on the ****** is stuck.

The transmission seemed perfect. The only two things noted was the one time I couldn’t get it to start and the difficulty moving the selector after a couple short trips..

If there was a solenoid that allows it to shift in/out of gears then I would like to trouble shoot that circuit if any one has a circuit schematic.

If not maybe I’ll need to pull the valve body out?.

Any more input would be very helpful.
Thanks, IB
