Hello, my mom's '04 Limited 2WD has been having a "clunking" noise, noticeable from the rear end. She just had the front struts done and I did the rear shocks today. I have test driven it briefly and while the clunk is less noticeable, it is still there. The clunk happens when taking off from a stopped position or sometimes when braking at low speeds. The only other factors I can think of are the upper control arm, or the lower control arm bushings. Is there a usual cause for this? Thanks.

Sounds suspension related...check the upper ball joint back there and bushings. A U joint would also have vibrations and a chirping noise.

I'll check that ball joint, I am thinking that is the main culprit. The u-joint will be checked as well, but I don't feel any vibrations so much as that clunk noise.

Having similar problem,. Will be taking apart this week.

Replaced rear shocks and sound got louder. Then replaced rear control arm which was shot and still have the noise.

Thinking its the wheel bearing.

a wheel bearing would never "clunk". They make a growling/grinding noise.

If you're getting a clunk the only options are u joints, possible shot bushings on control arms or shocks or your rear tri-link ball joint (which is a common wear item on kj's).

My rear tri-link ball joint was giving me a huge clunk, Glad I got that taken care of!

Another thing it may be if you just replaced the shocks. Did the shocks come with a inner sleeve to hold the bolt or just rubber?
