Woah, did not know that

I was looking at an 02 KJ the other day, and looked at the build date in the door jamb...and it was MARCH of 01!

So....it was a year old, and still the current model year, in March of 02. Didn't know they were built that early.

yes they are, on 06 like i have is built on 05, etc,

vehicles always go on sale the year prior, like right not the 2011 models are being sold now, even though its 2010, thats why summer/fall is the best time to buy because you can get a current year model, ie 2010 for less because they want to make room for 2011

The '02 KJ's were built for almost 2 years starting in march of '01 and going till about october of '02.I worked at a Jeep/GM dealership when the KJ came out and our 1st one arrived the begining of march of '01,bought mine almost 1 year later on feb 28th of '02.

Yep. Mine was built in October 2001.

All this date stuff got me curious about my 04... wondering if it was built in 03....
Surprisingly as an export to Canada it was built in June 04 and was on the road with 5 km on Jul 12-04, talk about fresh stock on mine...interesting.
I wonder if from Toledo it was trucked out west or put on rail car for shipment to Vancouver...all our overseas imports arrive by ships.

I knew they were built early, heck my 05 was built in the middle of July of 04....it's an 05 by only a week or two. But March?

Brand new vehicles usually start production very early to get some out to the market fast.

Not only is it a good Idea to pick up a 2010 late in the model year, or even in early 2011 (you can find them) for the initial cost, but it can help quite a bit with re-sale. After all, if you're buying it new, there has been an entire year there was little-to-no milage on it. When you go to sell it 4 years later in 2014, you really only have three years of milage on it.

On the otherhand, picking up a 2011 now gives you an extra 4-5 months on the odometer...

I used to have a job where I drove my own vehicle (not delivering pizza). I was amazed at the people who would go out an get a new car when the model year was first introduced, knowing they where going to put over 30K a year on it. The worst part was if they leased, it ususally spent the last 6 months of the lease parked becuse it was over the turn-in millage allowed.

getting a '10 in '11 won't help you with resale, because it's viewed as being a year older than it really is... that's one extra year's depreciation even without considering the mileage (this is why the price goes down during a factory blow out right before the new ones come in)... if you are gonna go new, get the early new one... the '11 you can get in '10 becaus in '14 when you go to sell it, it is only considered 3 years old, not 4. that extra year can mean a lot more than the extra 15k miles... depending on how long you have it before you sell it. i can see the idea on a lease... but I don't beleive the lease clock starts from the manufacture date, it starts from the lease purchase date, and you have "x" number of months in your lease, with "x" number of miles you can drive before your turn in date. divide one by the other and you get how many miles you can drive per month... if you have to park it for 6 months, then you drove too much, not because you bought one that was already a year old, or because it was a year newer
