05 Lift questions

I’ll respond with what kind of deal I can find in Phoenix on them.

So I poked around the front of my vehicle to identify the major rubbing happening right now, and found the upper control arm resting against the tire. Is that something that should go away when I replace all these components, or do I need wheel spacers or something to move my wheel further out? I’ll upload a picture later from my iPad

That is why I stated it may rub, too wide of a tire the ( 255-70-16s ) for a stock wheel.
More narrow tire or other wheels , for instance 16 X8 with 5 inches of backspacing will spread the tire out and will not rub
After you buy JBA UCAs that will help also

Got it, ok. So jba UCAs or different wheels with more backspacing would help. Which do you think would be the more cost effective solution to fixing the rubbing after the rest of this work is done? I have to be money conscious, and if the JBA UCAs would fix this, I might need to discuss getting those with the fiancé rather than getting a new factory set and spending more next year on it

spidertrax wheel spacers would be an inexpensive way to move those tires out a bit

No did not say wheels with more backspacing ,
stock is 5 inch backspacing , 7 inches wide
but with a 70 series tire on a 7 inch wide wheel it makes the sidewalls bulge out more , hence the rubbing you are getting
So either a 7 inch wide wheel with 4 inches of backspacing
or
a 8 inch with 5 inches of backspacing will work great
an 8 inch will stretch the sidewalls more and not bulge.
On the 03 I'm running a 265-70-16 on 8 inch wide 5 inches of backspacing wheels , 8.5 inch tread width and no issues at (with JBA arms)

Wheels with correct backspacing would be cheaper and better

I can't seem to find wheels less than 100 bucks each, spidertrax are 100 a pair, that's half the cost, plus you don't have to pay the tire shop to install. Or am I missing something

68 bucks each at Jegs
about the same at Summit
always people selling them even cheaper
Moabs can be found for 200 or so if lifted

I wanted to get in on this conversation. This is my first post although I have done a lot of research here. I just had the JBA 1.5 budget lift installed on my 04 Renegade (927/948, 90009/N132L, JBA UCA's, Teraflex Front/4"rear, new strut mounts and isolators). Had the installation done at Truck Toys, a local 4x4 place. Drove straight to firestone and had 4 245/70/16s (didn't want to worry about regearing or rubbing) Destination A/Ts mounted and alignment. After 3 hours, the manager called me back to talk to the tech who said he had tried everything but could not get the alignment in spec. I didn't expect there to be a problem, especially after going with the JBA UCAs. Any comments or suggestions?

They are an idiot
Go to a real alignment shop
Unless there is something wore out
We have done over 55 with the same parts here with no issues at all

( I hope they cut down the bumpstops to 2 inches)

927s/ 948s give 2.5 inches of lift over new stock height

Thanks for the response Tom. Really respect your knowledge and expertise, have relied on it a lot. I tried to find out the correct length for the rear bumpstops for the net 2.5 inches of lift and could only gather the rule of thumb being 1" for 1" of lift. The actual stop was only 3" tall and I told the guy at the installer they may need cut down and he assured me they Knew how to measure for proper length. I checked and they installed them without cutting. Could this be a problem? What do you recommend doing? I had inquired of Marlin about this and he replied to my email with a link that was not trusted by my AV. These were the bumpstops he recommended and, like all the other parts, I purchased from JBA

If you have a saw reach through coils and cut down to 2 inches tall, they will be fine then, well unless running wheels with 2-3 inches of backspacing , stock wheels will be fine

Thanks Tom. Will do. Plan on talking with the installer later today. The alignment tech also said they did not tighten the bolts on the DS control arm. Don't think I'll be going back to Truck Toyz for anything else. Your posts on this site have been invaluable.

That’s also good to know, I will cut down the teraflex bumpstops for the front of the truck. And no cutting down is needed in the rear, just add the hockey pucks. I’m placing my order for all of this today. I can’t wait until it all arrives and my KJ is back to being functional.

Sorry, I re-read that part of the conversation and misunderstood, I thought you were talking about cutting the front bump stops, I missed the part about the 4 inch rear bump stops. I will not be cutting the front ones, I should read a little closer while working.

So I feel like today is just a facepalm kind of day. I went to pull the trigger on everything in my amazon cart, and realized I had $200 worth of extra parts (like 3 rear shocks instead of 2). So I may try to pick up the UCAs, seeing if I can swing it.

If I were to not buy new wheels and just get the UCAs, would that solve the rubbing, or do I just need to find some cheap wheels for the front for the time being? Also, do I have to replace all 4 wheels, or just the front two if that’s the case. I don’t seem to be rubbing anywhere in the rear of the vehicle.

To clarify, I mean if I stick with 16x7 wheels instead of 16x8. I figured if I switched to 16x8 I would need to do it on all 4 tires

I have purchased most of what I need. Waiting on ordering the lower ball joints and outer tie rods until I decide on the UCAs, cause I can buy them as a kit if I choose to stick with stock for now. Specifically, I just purchased:

Bilstein 24-185660 (Amazon listing for these said for a Wrangler YJ, I assume it’s the same as the others I was looking at that, based on part number)
OME 2948 rear coils
Bilstein 24-139168 front shocks
OME 2927 front coils
Front shock mounts with new isolators (only comes with one per side)
Detroit Axle Rack and Pinion
Outer Tie Rod Ends
Moog K3199 Lower Ball Joints
Hockey Pucks

JBA Order placed for:

Bilstein Bushing Kit
Teraflex Front Bumpstops (uncut, :sawzall: )
Two coil isolators
JBA UCA’s for Lifted Liberty

Is there anything else I am forgetting here, or little odds and ends that I may need for the install of any of this that you would recommend? Anything in addition that I should look at, knowing that a lot of these parts are probably pretty worn out?


I am plotting out the next big changes I plan on for my truck, and the big one is looking at regearing. I’ve been reading up on the various threads about regearing on here, I’ve gotten a bit confused on what I actually need to change to 4.10 gears, but that’s a project for after my wedding, cause I feel like it would be best to not blow my wedding budget on a truck. :happy175:

Edit: Amazon, man, even though they’re still listed, the rear shocks are actually out of stock and won’t get here until at earliest 2 and half weeks after the rest of that order. I found a different set on Amazon for $10/per more, and they’ll be here around the same time as the other parts.

All of my parts from Amazon have shipped, and my JBA orders have been placed. My mechanic here in town can assemble the front for me, $30/per. Definitely a better deal than the spring compressor and risking death. I will take pictures of the progress once all the parts arrive.
