Hey
03 4x4 Auto 3.7

1. I've seen a few references to different differentials and I think transfer cases being available on these Libertys. How can I tell which I have? I've done a couple VIN checks, but neither has given that info.

2. Things got no tow hooks, front or rear. That seems odd. I've had more than a couple 4x4s in my time and theyve all had them. Has a rear trailer hitch. I'm not sure if it was a result of the fuel tank exposure recall, or if it is the factory tow package. Looks factory to me but I don't really know how to tell. Where would tow hooks go and whats a reasonable place to get them?

well with regards to the diffs you have 3.73 gears with the 3.7 and automatic ( unless of course someone swapped in 4.10s but highly unlikely
As far as what transfer case its as easy as looking at the shift handle, tell us whats on it and it'll tell us which you have:icon_lol:
Factory tow package would have the electric fan plus a mechanical is the easy way to tell
Tow hooks were installed on most 4X4 back in the 70s/80s but after that started phasing them out since so many soccer Moms bought SUVs and never needed them. Easy to add some

Why would you need a tow hook on the front?
Our Jeeps never need towing!

Oh wait....it is so you can pull other make vehicles out of trouble!

And the mopar rear hook won't fit with a hitch installed.

Need some man tires then:shrug::icon_lol:

If it were only the tires it wouldn't be an issue. Its the lack of weight and locking axles. My 25 year old Bronco with LS axles front and rear embarrass the Liberty and it only gives up about 2 miles per gallon on the highway with a nice 351W V8.

A stock 4wd 3.7 KJ weighs 4000lbs,lockers have nothing to do with getting stuck on wet grass.

Especially when you are using racing slicks!
Yep.

Heck I never use 4wd even in winter here and in Colorado, mostly because I'm just to lazy to lock in the front hubs.I also have dual ARB lockers and nope I don't engage the rear either.I actually have good tires and not needed 4wd or a locker.I save those goodies for the trail.

So you are saying its the design itself that makes them so helpless? I consider a Liberty a step above a Escape for off road (such as they are), below an Escape for highway use on slick roads. An Escape at least can use its ABS system to send traction to all 4 wheels - something that a stock Liberty can't do. Either way they are both commuter vehicles that have limited off road abilities that shouldn't be overstated.

Locking/LS axles have everything to do with gaining traction on a slick surface, if not why would locking/LS axles be offered? With 225-75-16 tires you have a 7" (?) wide tire making contact with the surface. With open differentials you have 14" of tire making contact to move the vehicle with 14" of tire adding to the rolling resistance. With LS or locking you have 28" of tire making contact to move the vehicle without the rolling resistance of the two nondrive wheels. Driving up a hill in rain soaked (or even dew soaked) tall grass with the Liberty is a joke. Exact same tires (only a bit wider and 15") the Bronco doesn't even come close to breaking traction.
