I see.
Now when it engages, is it as loud as during start ups?

Thanks

With the engine cold and turned off you should be able to move the fan with only a little resistance with your hand.

When the engine is very hot and turned off the fan should show much more resistance when moved by hand.

A trick we used to do on the old E30 BMW was to carefully plunge a rolled up newspaper into the spinning fan when the engine was hot...if the fan stops then the viscous clutch is shot....if the fan easily shreds the rolled up newspaper then the clutch is OK. I have not tried this on a Jeep so do so at your own risk...rather replace with a new Hayden clutch...most reports of the Hayden that I have seen are pretty good as far as the CRDs go!

And a good way to make confetti. A 2x4 would make less of a mess, but I can't imagine either one would be good for the fan blades. ;)
