Okay so I am getting code p1281. I am aware that the code is the engine is cold too long and fails to warm up to operating range fast enough.

The engine is not low on coolant (may be a tab overfilled)
The thermostat is fairly new (6,*** miles)

This is the second time the code came one (stayed off for 2 weeks once I cleared it the first time)

Here is where its confusing. I took it up to the auto parts to get the code cleared this time because it was right on the way home. Now driving the jeep it was already warmed up. I had the code cleared left and a mile down the road the light turned back on.

Could a bad sensor be causing the problem? (if so what sensor? I read somewhere that there is two?) I have looked at countless threads and it seems like this code is all over the place in terms of responses

Thanks in advanced. Jeep has 167k if that matters

I think there's a good chance it's your coolant temp sensor. Not sure about there being two - I've never had to mess with it on our Libby.

What does your temp gauge read after driving for a while? Do you have good heater output? Was the new thermostat OEM or aftermarket?

My 02 has one CTS in the front center between the AC compressor and the alternator. RockAuto has the Mopar for our year 42ish bucks. Since all the other stuff seems okay I'd change it and see.

Strange stuff. Maybe start with checking the connection at the sensor, making sure it's clean and secure.
