so i have a 2002 Liberty with 3.7 which is the smaller group 86 battery, the later models late 2003 and up are the larger group 34 or even the 78...
i would like to know if i can swap in a battery tray from a late 2003 and up into my 2002 so i can run a larger battery.
i found one reference to it being a bolt in swap,
Put a larger battery in a 2002 jeep liberty - Fixya

anyone know for sure if that will work, if not i might hit the junkyard tomorrow looking for a tray

which side is the "inner side"

i took my battery for a test and it tested good cleaned the connections and still the jeep couldnt start, just a click from the starter. bumped the ignition 3 times rapidly and the engine finally turned over, so i am fine now. i would really like to use the group 34 battery in the future though, more CCAs and it is cheaper than the group 86...

so which side do i trim? i can obviously still get a tray from the junkyard but didnt find one today.

Maybe both? It's held in by the front and back. Not completely sure it would hold it from sliding sideways though?

I used an Optima 34/78 , changed ends on wires to ring type, attached to the side terminals.Used the posts for winch cable attachment. Remove the tray and trim edge next to inner fender.

Literally just trim the inside edge. the side of the battery tray closest to the engine. That's all you need to trim. not front, not back.

When you trim it, you will lose the ability to mount the fuse box power supply to the battery tray, but it's not a big deal.

remove your battery
you should see this:

trimmed the 'inner' (engine side) of the tray and ended up with this:

note: i also had to trim the edge that holds the battery down, the corner driver side front corner of it. this is opposite of the hold down bolt. maybe it was just my battery, who knows.

this allowed me to fit a group 34 AGM battery. much better power, starts, etc.

jt, if ya just got a click from the starter, then three rapid clicks and it engages/turns over and starts, you ain't got a battery problem. If the battery was the issue you could have clicked it till hell froze and gotten the same results. Do yourself a favor and shop for a starter before you worry about replacing a perfectly good battery.

EDIT; I am curious about the torino 68 business. I had a limited edition 68 Ford "Cobra" in the early 70's. Just enough built to qualify for NASCAR with a C6 ****** and a 428Super Cobra Jet engine in a fastback Torino body. The left nut would be a cheap price for that screamer back!

To fit a Odyssey PC1500DT(or Diehard P1/P4) you need to trim both sides of the battery tray('03+ tray for group 34 battery). That battery is huge and weighs almost 60lbs.
That is good to know that the group 34's fit in on 03+
My Exide Edge AGM group 34 dropped in without trimming,thankfully.
I re-used the center battery temp sensor in place, since it had no issues.

Ya they are heavy, but got lots of juice now, bigger is better!
The AGM Edge tested new at 979 CCA, the Odyssey would probably test at 1200+CCA. You get what ya pay for in a virgin lead Odyssey.

So is group 34 a larger size than the 06 as well or just larger than the 02s?
