I want to start right and am going the royal purple route... But what weight would you guys suggest? Summer is here... I have my 4x4 beach permit so there will be driving on the beach and such.... And I live in ct. Now so the drive out to L.I. Will be about 100 miles round trip, maybe more...

Also any tips for breaking in the engine would be helpful... When I bought her I drove her like I stole her... And it worked out ok! But I don't want to hurt the new engine with having such a mentality... :D

5w30 and I'd put in anything but royal purple, but that's me.

In fact, with a brand new engine, I'd use plain old dino oil for the first 2-3 oil changes, then switch to a good synthetic.

It wouldn't benefit to start with a synthetic? Also what brand synthetic is considered good for our engines?

You have to break it in a bit first.

I like Castrol Syntec, personally and my uncle swore by Mobil 1 in his Audis, but others will chime in with their likes ;)

I've heard so much about motor oils that it's ridiculous... others will chime in, but what I've taken away so far...

It used to be that you broke in with dino oil. Now it doesn't matter.

Mobil 1 used to be good stuff, now it *****.

Royal Purple still is good stuff (afaik)

No need to change your oil every 3000 miles unless you are tjkj, in which case don't get to 3001 miles or your head will explode!!!

I wouldn't run Royal P in anything.
Mobil 1 no good any more ?? Disagree been running it for years in everything I've owned. Put it in the KJ at 1000 miles , now with 187,000 still doesn't use any
PLUS I change mine almost as often as TJKJ, but then I like to keep maintenance up on mine :waytogo::waytogo:
As far as break in, I break em in the way I going to drive them

I agree with tom, my father ran royal crap in his chevy, was crazy about maintaining it. The engine (modern 350) at 100k started to go south. He just traded it in with 108k and it had almost no power and ran like crap.

I use castrol in mine and change asap when it gets near 3k. Sometimes it goes a little more but the oil never has had anything in it.

I'm searching for the forum/article I was given a year or more ago. It had to do with Mobil 1 changing their formulation and IIRC the newer Mobil 1 is no different than any other synthetic because of it. I've been an ardent users of Mobil 1 too though honestly, but just out of habit.

EDIT:
Here's one of the discussions I was thinking about:
http://www.regalgs.org/topic/27572-picky-about-your-motor-oil-take-a-look/

Very nice list on the second page about oil longevity.

Still can't find the article I'm looking for though, may not exist. Crazy brain.

I use Mobil-1 Full Synth since the Jeep had 6000 miles on it. Now has just over 45000. I change my oil every six months. (March and September). I put on about 2000-2500 miles between oil changes. Probably could go a year with out changing it but that just doesn't feel right.

Still breaking in a engine with dino is still a good idea and change the oil before 30k like some here do.I have replaced many "factory installed" oil filters on vehicles with 60k+ miles on them then I can count.

Oh and I now change my oil every 1500 miles.same time as the balance/rotate and alignment check.Just easier to do it all at once.

That's crazy, but people never cease to amaze me...
not exactly related to oil, but today at work that was an "accident". A guy impaled his hand on a piece of glass while leaning on a hopper designated for "glass only". Seems like maybe he'd have thought his hand didn't belong there.

If you want to blow the motor again, put synthetic in it off the get go.

There are some tight tolerence motors (read that as "Above my price tag cars") that start with synthetic, because they literally will have too much friction to continue running.

the tolerences in a 4.0, 3.7, 4.7 are loose enough that running synthetic until they are broken in will cause them to run anemic, too and increase friction due to a lack of enough fluid to lubricate them.

the point of running regular oil for break-in is that it will more or less absorb any metal shavings and help get them out of the engine passages and into the oil pan, whereas synthetic on break-in will not.

That is a terribly dumbed won explanation. Basically, break it in on regular oil.

And like others, Anything but royal purple is ideal. I bet you also think sea-foam is a good idea.

Amsoil is notably one of the better synthetics. Mobil 1, royal purple, quaker state all have inappropriate detergents.

I'd also say that there is no such thing as an oil that's acceptable to change any later than 3000 miles.

I do my oil changes after 2500 miles, before 3000 miles.

Break-in oil changes on a new motor are important as well. You want to know a.s.a.p. if there is an abhorrent amount of metal shavings in your fluid. I have always done a 250-300 mile oil change, a 500 mile oil change, a 1500 mile oil change, then move to regular 2500-3000 mile changes.

Of course those are consecutive miles (300+500+1500) rather than at stated miles on the motor from install date.

Funny how fast people are to bash.. Can't just give an opinion without throwing in a dig? I love brake light fluid to... How often do you change yours??

Anyways... My engine is coming from a company called AER... They build a lot of high performance engines.. And from what I understand, they use better than stock parts on the internals... So I figured I would start with synthetic... I just put a call in to them... And will get the right answer from the horses mouth... Ill let you guys know what they recommend... (Which is what I should have done from the start)... I do value the opinions of my fellow Libby owners... So I asked here first...

There is a difference between a rebuilt/remaned engine compared to a actual new engine.A remaned/rebuilt requires a actual break in which can not be done using synthetic oil.A brand new engine you can get away with it but still not adviseable.

Oh, I'm sorry. You didn't know the answer to the question, so I gave you an accurate answer.

That "dig" was to make the point that thinking royal purple is an ideal or good fluid is comparable to thinking you should ever do anything to break down and remove internal "engine grime" while your engine internals are rotating. That's like injecting plaque directly into your veins.

AER stated that they never use synthetic oil! He said, not that I'm saying there's anything wrong with it... We just don't use it at all. So I'm thinking of giving it a go with just conventional oilf from here on out... Or until I feel I need to make the change sometime in the future! Thanks for all the advice!

remember that to change from dino to synthetic (as we had stated, break-in on dino is necessary), you want to space it out between dino and full synthetic by running a blended oil for one, two, or 3 oil changes. It's the only way to safely switch. I space it out on 3 oil changes. One would be sufficient, but I'm a bit of a stickler on overdoing things.

You cxan switch to synthetic oil anytime you after you get some breakin miles on the engine. You can also switch at will from syn to dino and back again with zero issues.
