Decided it is time for my wife to get a new vehicle. I am pushing for a Liberty she likes the Trailblazers. We are going tomorrow to look at two different 2006's at two different dealerships. Looking for a little bit of info on what to look for that are common issues, rust areas, and what a fair price would be,

My favorite, if I can get a better price
Red Renegade
Asking 14,300
Cloth int.
Sunroof
Light bar
63000 Miles
The light bar is missing two of the covers is it legal to drive with the covers off? It also has one broken light in the light bar any idea on the cost to replace?

Number two
Black Limited
Asking 13,900
Leather
54,000 Miles

We are going tomorrow to drive them both, hopefully soon I will be posting as a jeep owner

Check your Sate laws to see if its legal, all sates are alittle different. If you could get the Renny a little lower then total take it.

I personally would take the renny. Have you ever owned a black vehicle? I have tried waxing my last car almost every day and everything shows up on it, that's just my opinion. And I like cloth too :) if it's illegal couldn't you just order a couple covers? Some blue painters tape will cover them up for a couple days if cops are that bad about them.

Not super worried about how illegal it was, just wanted to use it to try and get some money knocked off the price. I just got to work after driving the renegade has a few small issues I am surprised they are asking more than the black one, rear plastic bumper is faded, a few small stains on the seat not bad, has been smoked in, one of the lights in the light bar is busted out, and the rock rails (not sure if that is the right name the bars under the doors) have lost their paint and are rusting, nothing a little bed linear won't fix. This one has part time only 4wd which is fine with me.

I did like the way they drive and the wife seemed happy too. She didn't like a few small things, not as much storage as the trailblazer, arm rest is small. It did have a few road noise issues that I want to see if it is just Liberty noises when we drive the black on tonight.

Ned, I agree on the black but when you get a good shine on them they look great I also agree on the cloth most cars we have looked at the leather is cracked and horrible looking.

Thanks for the help guys, any reason you think the Renegade is a better buy? Is the Renegade package better than the limited?

Most likely just cosmetic reasons for pushing the Renegade. I must admit that's why I chose mine over the limited.

Not much difference aside from the looks ... maybe a slightly more powerful alternator. All of the other possible differences are not necessarily there just because it's a Renegade. ie mine came with no skids or lightbar.

If you can walk away from that sexy retro flat hood, more power to ya :D I couldn't.

I wouldn't rule out private sellers on Craigslist, way cheaper than the dealer, and you could talk them down at least 1000 from asking price...

Adult owned and operated. Tires are only a few months old. 75,000 miles. Clean and in great running condition. Only really 2 minor issues with the vehicle...the drivers window needs mild assistance when closing and the rear drivers side window is inoperable (needs a small plastic part to work). Blue book on this vehicle in "fair" condition is $11,105...however in my opinion its in good condition, one step up. Serious inquiries only. Price is $6999...No lowballers please this is a good deal to begin with.....

2005 Jeep Liberty Renegade - $12900 (Walled Lake)

12,900 Firm. This car is priced to sell at well below Kelly Blue Book Value. Call if you would like to see the car. I'd be happy to show it while at work. Call to set something up.

Mileage: 45,223

Features: CD Player, Tow Package, Cruise Control, Power Seats, Tinted Glass, Rear Window Wiper, Remote Keyless Entry, Anti-Lock Brakes, Airbag: Driver, Airbag: Passenger, Power Windows, Power Locks, Rear Window Defroster, A/C: Front, Power Steering, Alloy Wheels, Fog Lights

Selling Points: Kelly Blue Book value of $14,300.Pioneer receiver. Dual 12in Kicker subwoofers with Kenwood amp and box can be worked into the deal if interested.

Condition: This Jeep has been very reliable. All regular maintenance has always been kept up to date and it really shows. Tires have plenty of tread. The brush guard along with the renegade package give this liberty a much more aggressive look as well as adding plenty of off road ability.

Drove two more liberties tonight, 1st the black limited which turns out was wrecked at some point. When you turn hard left the tire rubs the fender. Which is a bummer even being black and leather you would think this thing just came off the show room floor.

Found another Renegade in Saginaw 20 min from here. 75,000 miles I do like the Renegade package. However, no light bars, no skid plates, no rails. Drives great with new tires 12,400

Thanks so much for the Craigslist ads, I looked around here but not all the way in detroit about two hours from here, emails already sent. I can't believe the price difference even from dealer to dealer I knew the private to dealer would be a big difference.

Thanks to the forum every salesman has learned something from me about the Liberties hopefully I can post in the future as a Jeep owner. I do think my wife has decided she likes the jeep more but she wants to drive one more Envoy.

I am still working out the math on what all fees would be to know what to is a good deal on the private owner jeeps since I usually only talk out the door prices with dealers.

Keep looking and checking them out and you will find the right one for you.

Be sure to get 2 sets of working keys because if there is only one you will need to go to the dealer to get it programmed ($$). If you have 2 you can program a third one yourself.

Don't forget to check the hidden slot in the glovebox for the owners manual.

Hope you are successful in pushing your wife towards a Liberty instead of a Trailblazer. I had a Buick Rainier (basically a dressed up Trailblazer); most troublesome vehicle I've ever owned and it was the last GM product I'll ever buy.

Prices for KJs in States are pretty high. In Ontario prices of Sport 2006-2007 with 70-90 K (kilometers not miles) are around $12000. I bought my Limited with 32000 kms! for less then 15K :)

If you are saying you sent an email to try to contact one of the Jeep sellers from the craigslist ads I posted, I gave the link to each ad, but removed the phone number...If you click the link the phone number will be in the ad...

A tip is to basically ask what is the absolute lowest you will take? If he is selling for $14,000 maybe he'll say $13,500....Tell him you can give him $11,000....

Then he'll counter.....then you counter his counter and you'll end up with a good price

If you do any off roading the ABS and traction control *****.
Also a thing to look out for are the rear window lift mechanisms.
From 2005 on they are problematic.

Can't you disconnect a fuse to disable these options? I know you won't have any kind of lockers or anything but would this make or break a selling point?

The Renegade is a nice package when it includes the skids and tow hooks. If it doesn't then it is simply a dressed up Sport with a higher capacity alternator. If it has the lightbar you can have a lot of fun with it - and don't worry about the covers missing or replacing a broken lens. I don't have the covers for mine and pass inspections with no problem. Lenses are readily available.

One thing you might consider (I know you've mentioned it already.) If this will be your wife's DD you might consider finding a Libby with the SelecTrac transfer case. VERY EASY to explain to rookie Jeepers that the Full Time setting can be used any time/any where - as opposed to the CommanTrac Part Time xfer case. Come winter your wife can leave it in Full Time mode for the whole season with no problems - but the Part Time is easily forgotten and all of a sudden she's telling you about the horrible "banging" noise coming from the front end... :disgust:

My 2 cents

Thanks Bob, I agree with the full time AWD set up if I am worried about it she can take the Dakota to work, but she has a good grasp on how pissed I get when I find out she is using 4wd on pavement since she did this once on the truck, nothing was broken but she understands now why if feels like everything was bound up when she turned.

She did decide she wants a Liberty :) also that she wants the Renegade package :) and she wants the light bars, to bad the only one in Michigan like that right now is the one we were looking at and it needs a lot of cosmetic work stains inside, paint chipped off luggage rack, rock bars rusting (normal I am finding), and the rear bumper is faded they won't move off 14,000 out the door they swear they are taking a loss not my fault they paid to much.

So I have extended my search and found three, one in Chicago, two in WI. The one that looks promising is in WI green and looks great from the picture not sure if I can let my self trust the sales guy enough to fly out there since I won't have a ticket home I am stuck buying it but it helps they are all with 60 miles of each other. The worst part is they scrapped the rock bars since they had rust on them, at least I can talk him down now.

I need to change my username after three weeks of looking we decided we are willing to travel to get one, in fact cheaper for me to fly than drive a car to get it. Hopefully the guy on the phone is being honest, has everything we want except the rock rails (he took them off because they where rusty and someone scrapped them). Worse case if I get there and I don't like it I can fly home.

The details, 2006, 55,000 miles, renegade, green. Paid $13,000 a little more than I wanted but cheaper than the ones around here. Here is a link to the autotrader ad Thanks again for all the help guys

Looks like you got a good Renegade - and a couple grand cheaper than the window sticker! :smokin:

Keep us informed!
