hi everyone im new to the forums here and it looks like a good one to me lots of users!

anyway i sold my gf my 2002 liberty v6 cause i had to thin out my collection and she absolutely hates the mpg even though she knew the numbers i guess seeing is believeing so, this brings me to my point..

on a 2002 liberty with 4x4 and v6 is the l4 swap possible keeping the trans electronics and transfer case? and what exactly do i need (junkyard) to make it all work if so? im guessing the l4 will bolt up to the trans and ill need the engine harness/ecm...

im capable and own a large diesel repair business so dont be afraid to get technical, thankyou all!:party52:

Somewhere between being sane and insane!
The cost would be much more then it's worth,Trade it in for a 4 ******.

You will need a whole new engine, trans, cradle, wiring, and computers just to start. Then you will need to regear to 4.10's as the 2.4 is severly underpowered in a 4000lbs KJ.

Either trade it in or use the money for the swap to buy more gas, which would fuel it for about 10 years for the cost of the swap.

Knocking on wood, have about 206,000m on mine.No problem, yet. Think that one sees a very small % of Liberty owners on a forum(Girlfriend counted 7 at one intersection today,I am only one on site) of which a 15-20% only post looking for a miracle cure.

I had a valve seat issue with mine, but I was at 170K miles also. Only took $250 to have the head rebuilt, and I was good to go again. Still truckin' along.

Anyone with 4banger Libertys available to post their fuel mileage? I have a feeling that their fuel mileage wont be alot better, if any then the V6. You have an underpowered engine, lower gearing to compensate for it, and a heavy vehicle to boot, well kind of anyways. Look at the WJ grand cherokees, the 4.0L I6, vs the 4.7L V8, I read alot of people saying they got about the same mileage, and was sluggish in comparison. You burn most of your fuel on acceleration, so an underpowered setup is doomed. Lets say you go thru and do the swap. The vehicle will be worn out two fold before you see a cost savings. If fuel economy is an issue, a diesel would be one consideration, slower driving speeds, or a different vehicle would be some others.

I have an export 2.4L with 4.10s and the 6 speed manual.

Unless you have the 6-speed (opposed to the 5-speed) AND the 4.10 gearing, you are doomed.

I recently swapped to BFG A/T 245/75/16 and the EVIC reads an average of 14L/100km consumption and I'm always thinking on fuel economy when driving.
(The rev per mile might not be 100% correct with the tire swap but I'll get to that sooner or later...)
I'm guestimating a true average consumption of 15L/100 Km

Powerwise I'm not 100% happy with this engine. I would love to have some more vvvrrruummmpff when driving on the highway. The fastest I've driven it was 140 km/h but with the new tires the top speed dropped to 120Km/h. When I want to accelerate it takes some time and planing in advance.
If this rig is going to be your DD and you need to drive long distances (as in my case) then I don't think you will be satisfied.

Try to dig some info on the 2.5 CRD. I believe this is the best combination between power and fuel cost.

Between swapping engines or buying another rig, I would go for the second option, unless the price difference is substantial. (I don't know the price differences over the US)

Alot of Jeep owners here in Greece are converting to LPG, breaking the conversion cost even, within a year or two depending on how many miles per year they do.
LPG here is less than 50% the price of gas.

Have you considered this option?

I agree with m_volyrakis.
I have got the 2.4 Export 4 ****** with 4.10s and the 5 speed manual and it is quite underpowered, but only as expected. If you want to go fast, buy a sports car. The 2.4 KJ goes ok so long as you don't expect great things from it, but you have to keep it singing to get anywhere quick, a bit like riding a 2 stroke motorcycle with all the power shoved up at the top and as soon as you change gear, it,s gone again. Hehe. Last time I looked, which was about 2 years ago, honestly, I was averaging about 16 - 18mpg and down to 12 going down a German Autobahn (no speed limits) at 100mph with the aircon on. Eek! I don't bother about fuel consumption, even at more than £6 a gallon over here in the UK. When it's gone, fill it up and try not to think about it. I would stay with what you have and just enjoy the ride and as TJKJ said, it will take a lot of fuel savings to cover the cost of the initial engine swap project. So just save yourself a lot of grief and make friends with your local garage petrol lady! :smokin:
