Bad tires==problems....

so heres my question: when tires are shot, what kind of things can they do (negative) to my jeep?
I need to get new tires but I wont have money until after I graduate and the ones I got are ****** SR-As. so today im drivin on the freeway in a downpour going 55 with both hands on the wheel trying to control myself and the whole time it felt like I was being pushed off the road both ways and im pretty sure I just hydroplaned for 20 miles right? then on the way home I took a diff way and used the fulltime 4x4, i still had a hell of a time but it seemed like the front end was constantly working cuz the back wasnt and then when i put it into 2wd it wouldnt disengage until i reversed. so was all this because of the tires/ or do i have multiple issues?

btw, the whole i accelerated while on fulltime it rumbled and vibrated like crazy, if it helps

Bad handling(which you already experienced),vibs that can never be corrected which leads to early bearing failures,shock wear,and bushing wear.Then you got the sudden blowouts that will occur at any speed and poor braking performance(except on clean,dry pavement).

I would start with a wheel alignment, and the shop that does the work can inspect the front end components and further advise before the alignment if anything else needs immediate attention. If all is well in the front end department,they will complete the alignment and you will notice a great improvement in handling right away.
Then onto new tires, and later address any remaining issues.
If the tires are bald or worn unevenly that is a sign that the alignment is the first thing, and you could look for some used tires at 50 percent that are very reasonably priced to get you by for now.

Nothing is going to make sense if you continue driving on tires that are in serious need of replacement and could potentially have worn or thrown belts that will cause vibrations and bound to fail.

Forget the alignment until you buy new tires,have the tires installed and then the alignment done,ideally at the same shop.


Oh and bad tires can cause alignments to go out of specs making it money flushed down the toilet.

If he's got vibrations from his tires, he likely has separated belts which cause pulling, therefore ALIGNMENT WON'T DO ANYTHING TO BETTER HIS CURRENT SITUATION.

Agreed. If they have to wait for 3 weeks, drive as minimally as possible, especially on highways, or inclement weather.

a running/driving Jeep no matter if it has 200,000 miles on it
is worth more than $400
yet you can buy 4 new tires for about $400
sure they are not the best but 100X better than what you have
and the ones you have could cost you your Jeep and maybe

i had to go a bit on my bad tires. drive it as little as possible. go slow if you do drive, and get new ones asap, then alignment. and slow down in the rain. if it feels bad, bad tires or not, slow down.

Interesting advice you've been given. I never would have thought that bad tires could indirectly harm your ride. I thought the only danger was the increased likelihood of an accident.

Is there any chance you can buy a set of used tires or maybe borrow a used set for three weeks? At the least you have to avoid diving in wet weather or else you're putting the rest of us in danger too

did anyone mention that bad tires -> vibration can lead to brake wear? ( a tire twisting slightly warps a rotor.. normal driving isnt bad but micro vibrations can prematurely wear a pad down)

Can't cause break wear,can cause excessive runout but will never cause brake wear.
